WELLINGTON FIRST SALE. WELLINGTON, Dee. 4. Wool buyers were as liusy ns bees today valuing wool in the Wellington stores. The first local sale of the season opens at 9 a.m. at the Town Hall on Thursday. A heavier catalogue than was at. first allotted by the New Zealand Wool Committee will be put before buyers, and will amount to practically 30,000 bales. The original allotment for this sale was 25.000 bales, subsequently raised to 20,000, and then to 29,000, and still later expanded. Individual catalogues will he offered in order of sale as follows; Broker. Bales. The wool to be offered is described as well grown and attractive and is expected to meet with very keen competition from fine wool buyers. The fourth scries of wool sales began with an increased Japanese demand for all good to average topmaking sorts. Bradford and the Continent were also competing. Prices remained firm, though in the case of good to bos' descriptions buyers showed greater dis crimination. Prices generally were from par to five per cent, below the last, sales’ closing. There was a keen demand for come backs and crossbreds, which showed a hardening tendency. Good clearances were effected. A total of 13,327 bales was offered, 12,475 were sold at auction, also 501 privately. Greasy Merino fleece sold to 29d.
