THE TURF

FEILDINGRESULTS HANDICAP TO TIGER GAIN DIATOMOUS WINS SPRINT JOUR WANGANUI SUCCESSES. By * 4 Kestrel.” Four successes came the way of Wanganui horses on Saturday, when the concluding day of the Feilding Jockey Club’s meeting was held, two of the winners being trained on the Wanganui tracks and the other pair at Fordell. All Supreme and Knollmere were the Wanganui-trained winners, while Ruanui and Boon are prepared by F. Tilley at Fordell. The attendance for the concluding day was not quite up to expectations, the unpromising outlook in the morning keeping many away. Still, the totalisator turnover did not .suffer, the amount handled during the day being Ji9425, an increase of £2276 on last

year’s figures. The total for the meeting was £18,852, as compared with £16,917 10s for the 1932 spring meeting, the incretasc thus being £1934 10s. Fortunately for the club the large dividend shared by Boon’s supporters did not materialise till late in the day. The dividends were mainly of handy proportions, there being only two “win” dividends under £4. There were some handy place dividends also, Havering being the outsider of the lastrace and Boudoir making a doublefigure return in the Nikau Hack Handicap. Tiger Gain came from the hack ranks to take the honours in the St. Andrew’s Handicap, in which he scored a run-away victory after making the pace a “cracker.” Carfex did best of the others to cut Aiguille out of second place by the narrowest of margins, with the veteran Arrow Lad, making his sixth appearance in successive years in the event, finished fourth. The favourite. View Halloo, was last, but he could not stand the torrid pace set by Tiger Gain and Carfex. It was a small sprint field that contested the Colyton Handicap, and Diatomous displayed a brilliant turn of speed to win all the way, sticking on well. Sea Fox might have been closer had he not run out wide on the turn, while Farmer threatened danger crossing the top but could not make any impression on the leader. Improved by his race on Thursday, Knoll mere repaid those who stuck to him by winning the Empire Handicap nicely after leading over the last five furlongs. He had to stave off a challenge by the outsider. Havering, who returned a big dividend for the “place.” Lady Spy appeared to have every chance, and so did Speed, but Ihe favourite, La Poupee, was a sufferer through being interfered with when Knollmere went into the lead, though whether this cost her the race is not is a matter for opinion. Ruanui, more patiently handled than

on the opening day, won the Cheltenham Hurdles comfortably after letting Cotsfield and Air Laddie make the pace to the last hurdle. Air Laddie was consistent, while Manuiri ran quite a good race. The Wanganui-owned All Supreme was responsible for a great performance in winning the Novice Stakes, for he was last three furlongs from home and finished with a paralysing burst. He looks like being an extra good sort for Mr. L. G. Paul, who trains the Chief Ruler gelding himself. The Oroua Nursery Handicap did not bring a very classy lot of youngsters together, but victory went to the better seasoned Lord Hereford, who finished solidly, in contrast to the favourite, Note Issue, who ran greenly. This Paper Money filly will be improved a.s a result of the race. Scholar shaped like a good one, while Burnish finished better of the Currie pair, neither of whom was smart out from the tapes. Hazoor, at a good price, won the Rongotea Hack Handicap from Catalogue and an outsider in Cardinal Moon. The dividend sensation was provided by Boon, a four-year-old Pombal —Ohui gelding, who carries the same colours a? Ruanui. Boon’s supporters shared a dividend not far short of a third of a century, while the backers of the run-ner-up, Boudoir, got a double-figure return, the “win” supporters just missing a dividend which would have topped two centuries. Though the rain held off there was a keen wind which became rather boisterous at times, and the late afternoon became very cold. The track was again aard and fast, but in excellent order. Following a lengthy inquiry after the concluding event, the judicial committee suspended W. Grindlay. rider of Havering, for two months, for ‘com-

ing across Sp< *d and Emotion in the straight. It was decided to take no action with regard to the incident in the back stretch, in which Knollmere appeared to interfere with La Poupee. Ruanui Makes Amends. Backed better than the other six in the Cheltenham Hurdles, Ruanui made amends for his first day failure. Air Laddie, Cotsfield, Ruanui, March Alone and Manuiri was the order over the first obstacle, but Cotsfield piloted the field past the .stands, Air Laddie, Ruanui, Manuiri and Riotous being the order of the others. Cotsfield and Air Laddie showed the way down the back, with Ruanui and Manuiri next and March Alone following after a gap. Manuiri ran up to the others crossing the top and was with Air Laddie coming into the straight, but Ruanui came with a good run to land over the last fence with Air Laddie and beat him home by two and a-half lengths. Half a length away was Manuiri. with March Alone fourth and Cotsfield next. A Winner From Wangaiiui. Widden was the elect of backers in the Novice Stakes, but All Supreme won nicely after being last at one stage. Awekctia. Widden, Wyndale, Maypay, Hard Times, Calydon, and Hint wa.s the order as they swung out from the barrier, and across the top the order of the, leaders was much the same, with Calydon and Tahurangi ranging up with the next bunch and All Supreme commencing a run from the back. Wyndale, Awekctia and Widden were actually first into the straight, with Calydon next, but All Supreme sustained his run and won, going away, by a length. Calydon was a neck in front of Maypay, with Widden fourth ind Tahurangi next.

Tiger Gain all the Way. View Halloo and Carfex were favourites for the St. Andrew’s Handicap, but Tiger Gain scored a run away victory, leading throughout. Tiger Gain led out of the straight, with Carfex, View Halloo and Arrow Lad next and Aiguille and Arikira fol lowing to the back stretch. Tiger Gain was clear along the back and across the top, Carfex having failed in an at tempt to get through on the fence, and the pair were followed to the straight by View Halloo, Arrow Lad, Aiguille (making a fast run), Thrasher and Arikira in that order. In the run to the judge Tiger Gain went away afain, winning eventually by four lengths, with Carfex beting Aiguille for second place by a length and a-half. Arrow Lad was only a head away, with Arikira and Thrasher next and View Halloo last. Seasoned Youngster Wins. Noto Issue was elected favourite for the Oroua Nursery Handicap, with Palm and Lord Hereford at good prices. Canopy and Burnish were slow to move out from the tapes and Palm showed the way out for Lord Hereford, Scholar, Note Issue and Sweet Music, and this was the order across the top and into the straight. Once in line for the judge Lord Hereford asserted his claim and went on to win by a length from Note Issue who was a length and a-half in front of Scholar. Burnish, finishing well, was fourth, and Palm fifth. Consistent Hazoor. Sanguine King and Pango were best backed in the Itongotca Hack Handicap, with Hazoor, a winner at his recent starts, at a handy price. With the large field there was some squeezing at the start, and one of the sufferers was Limbohm, who was soon tailing the field. Sanguine King, Catalogue, Cardinal Moon, Blue Boy, Gold Ruler and Sir Romeo were in that order as they ran out of the straight, but Blue Boy moved up to Sanguine King as they entered the back stretch and with five furlongs to go this pair led from Chief Line. Catalogue, Cardinal Moon, Kalmuk, Hazoor, Sir Romeo, Pango, and Limbohm. Chief Line was in the van crossing the top, where he had Sanguine King, Catalogue, Cardi-

nal Moon, Blue Boy, Hazoor and Pango in close attendance. There was a great finish, Hazoor and Catalogue fighting it out, the verdict going to Hazoor by the narrowest of margins. Cardinal Moon was three-quarters of a length away, and then came Sanguine King and Pango. Three-year-old’s Sprint. Diatomous was £4 better backed than Slippery in the Colyton Handicap, and won nicely after leading all the way. Diatomous wag smartest out from the tapes, with Slippery and Farmer next, and thus they raced down the back anil across the top, where Farmer got up into second place. Sea Fox ran out wide on the turn and over the final stages could get no nearer than within three-quarters of a length of Diatomous, who held on well. Farmer was a length and a-half away, with Slippery nearly two lengths further back. Boon Springs a Surprise. In a good betting race Courtega was a firm favourite over Dollar Prince, but the winner turned up in Boon, who returned a large dividend. Cullus and Acceptable were first to get into their stride, with Golden Chant. Boon. Courtega, Host and Boudoir next in order. Acceptable soon assumed the role of pacemaker, with Cullus and Golden Chant alongside him, the trio being followed three furlongs from home by Courtega, Boon, Host, Boudoir ami Land Tax. Courtega could not get through in the straight and Boon finished fast on the outside to beat another outsider in Boudoir by a length and a-half. Courtega was only half a head away, with Cullus and Acceptable next. Knollmere Goes Better. The largest pool of the meeting was registered over the concluding event, the Empire Handicap, in which there was very even betting, La Poupee being preferred to Knollmere and Speed. Another lengthy delay occurred at the starting barrier, Esteem being mainly responsible. Eventually La Poupee, Esteem, Knollmere and Lady Spy showed the way out from the tapes to Emotion and Speed. Five furlongs from home Knollmere was working his way to the front and he showed the way across the top to La Poupee, Esteem, Lady Spy and Speed, having slightly crossed the favourite as he went into the lead. The order was scarcely changed on the home turn, save that Havering was putting in a great run on the outside. Knollmere hung on well in the run to the judge to win by a neck, with Lady Spy a length and a-half behind Havering. Then came Emotion and La Poupee.

ANOTHER SENSATION? DISAPPEARANCE OF WINNER. SUSPICION AROUSED. Received Dec. 3, 7.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. S. The racer Uhrybean which won a race at Kilmore, Melbourne, on Tues day has disappeared. Search and inquiries alike arc not fruitful. Nothing is known of the person who is described as the owner, and the prize-money ha> not yet been claimed. Sydney sportsmen who have seen the picture of the finish of Ch ry bean’s race noted the unusual similarity in the markings to those of the well-known Sydney performer Erhie, which is stated to have been spelling at Forbes for some weeks after a hard season’s racing. A pressman yesterday was shown a horse in a paddock near Forbes resembling Erbie in all respects. It was explained that it had not been out of the paddocks for the past ten weeks. THE WINOOKA PARTY RACING IN AMERICA. AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. M. Polson, E. Britt, and R. T. Naylor, trainer, jockey, ami manager of the racehorse Winooka, passed through Auckland by the Mariposa on their return to Sydney. They declared their intention of going back to the United States, perhaps in February, racing Winooka there in April and May, and then probably taking him to England to race. Meanwhile Winooka remains in America. They said he hail four wins in seven races, won £2750, and but for the high exchange the trip would have been profitable. Mr. Naylor emphatically said that it 1 was useless to take any but a first-class horse to America, where there were some great horses. Equipoise was a “horse and a half” and the equal of Phar Lap. He also said that racing, in the United States was in a bad way. There was tremendous unemployment. Many people were simply unable to pay the admission charge, and free tickets could be had for the asking.
