ILLEGAL RAFFLES
SEQUEL IN COURT. [ Ter Press Association. 1 • DUNEDIN, Oct. 13. As a sequel to the queen carnival, in which articles were raffled to raise funds, the four chairmen of the vaxions committees appeared voluntarily in the Police Court to answer ‘charges o' establishing a lottery by which prizei were gined by mode of chance. The magistrate indicated that ho had every sympathy with the objects of the * campaign to raise funers for the relief of distress, but it would be improper tor him not to enter a conviction. The three defendants were each fined 20s and costs. A conviction only was entered against the rourth, but on a chaige of selling liquor at a dance he jras fined a similar amount.
