THE TURF

RACING AT FOXTON SECOND WINTER MEETING COPPER KING’S SUCCESS WINNAGAN’S STEEPLECHASE. (Special Reporter). Brilliant weather and a large attendance favoured the Foxton Racing Club on Saturday for their second winter meeting, and with good fields engaged in all except one of the seven events, some interesting racing was provided. The course was in great order. The totalisator handled £6339 10s, as compared with £6llB 10s at last month’s meeting and £4225 on the concluding day of the last annual meeting. During the afternoon K. Voitre, the leading horseman, piloted still another winner, advancing his record total still further for the conclusion of the season. In the Whirokino Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase Elicit, after making a great effort to catch the favourite. Winnagan, dropped dead after passing the post. A sensational place dividend was returned by Treasure Hunt, who finished third in the Motuiti Maiden Stakes, supporters getting a return of just under half a century. The Foxton Handicap, was won by Mr. Jas McKelvie’s Woodville-trained Copper King, while Joie de Vai and Thrasher filled the places. The Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase resulted in a further success for Winnagan, which wod decisively from Tunbridge and Petrarch. Vi taphone’s Success. The four at the head of the card were scratched for the hurdles. Knollmere, one of the fancied candidates, being unable to get to the course in time, the reason for this being a broken-down float. Morrath, Ramuna and Invictus were supported in that order. The favourite was one of the leaders for a mile but after that she dropped out of the picture. Invictus was one of the leaders at the straight entrance but did not go on with it. Leisure and Morrath were first away from Invictus, and the order passing the stands was Morrath, Leisure, and Rasouli from Invictus and Vitaphone, with a gap back to Roseric and Ramuna. Leisure and Morrath had knocked once fence flat. The field closed up as they turned into the back and Morrath and Rasouli were leading from Roseric and Leisure. Ramuna was last but moving up. The field was bunched at the five furlongs and when Morrath started to drift Invictus, Vitaphone and Rasouli took charge, being on terms at the home turn, where Ramuna was in fourth place. Vitaphone drew away from the others but had to be ridden‘out to beat the fast-finishing Ramuna, who was only a head away at the finish. Rasouli was two lengths away, third, and there was a gap of three lengths to Invictuse and Leisure. Sensational Dividend. The Maiden event was remarkable for the sensational dividend returned by the Awapuni-trained Treasure Hunt, which finished third and paid just on half a century. Gladium was favourite and after being nicely placed all the way he finished well to win. Pheon got away badly, the early leaders being Moorwyn, Treasure Hunt and Gladium, from Count Roussillon, < May Pay, Canefield, and Arctic Region. Arctic Region and Acrelict moved forward at the far turn and the order crossing the top and into the straight was Moorwyn, Arctic Region, Treasure Hunt and Peon, Gladium. Aweketia, Moorwyn, Whetu-ma. and Acrelict. Copper King Wins Nicely. Mr. Jas. McKelvie’s three-year-old gelding Copper King was a good favourite for the Foxton Handicap, and he duly landed after being being handy to the leaders all the way. Playground, Thrasher and Copper King were first away and they led past the stands, followed by Lovecourt, Joie de Vai, and Juggle in that order. Thrasher went to the front going round the bend and he showed the way into the back from playground. Copper King and Lovecourt. Copper King went up to Playground at the five furlongs and Thrasher set the pace across the top, with Copper King two lengths away, and Playground a length back at the head of the others. The leaders were unchanged into the straight and Joie de Vai was in fourth place. Thrasher still had charge half-way down the running but B. H. Morris, on Copper King, had a look back to see if danger threatened, and he judged his run to a nicety. Copper King going past Thrasher after a short tussle and on to win nicely by half a length from Joie de Vai, which made up a good deal of ground over the last bit. Thrasher was over a length further back in third place, and Playground was fourth, followed by Lovecourt and Juggle together. It was a popular win and Mr. McKelvie, who had returned from Wellington the previous day. was present to see his horse score. Winnagan’s Steeples. The Hack and Hunters’ Steeples proved the best of good things for Win nagan, and the Birkdalc gelding scored just as decisively as he did at Marton. He took the lead shortly after the start and ho won as he liked after giving a faultless display of jumping. He had a good lead with a round to go and Elicit made a bold effort to get him and half a mile from home looked like £oing so. Elicit reduced the gap to j«S'gvhs at the three furlongs but the effort was too great for him and although he kept going, ho dropped dead just after reaching the post. Passing the stands the first time Win nagan was showing the way, followed by Park Acre, Tunbridge, Elicit. Fine Acre, Tunbridge and Petrarch. Going into the back Winnagan opened up a big gap on the others. Park Aero was in second place but he stopped to a walk before taking the fifth obstacle and he was last before he got going again. The order passing the stands the second time was Winnagan, six lengths ahead of Elicit, Fine Acre and Tunbridge, Park Acre, Tenacre, and Petrarch. Elicit then set out after the leader and going into the back was four lengths away from Winnagan. There was a gap of eight lengths back

to Fine Acre and Tunbridge. At the far turn Elicit moved forward and at the three furlongs looked like catching Winnagan, who, however, was going along comfortably. Elicit could not go on with his run and Winnagan held a commanding lead when he turned for home. Elicit was second and Tunbridge and Fine Acre were a long wav back. Winnagin was not troubled to win by ten lengths from Tunbridge, and twelve lengths from Petrarch, which got up to cut Elicit out of the money. Elicit was fourth and Fine Acre next. Nico Win for Wasteland. The hack mile was a good betting race and Miss Hushabye, Sir Romeo. Palace and Red Flush wore all web backed. • Wasteland stumbled at the start and was last away, Miss Hushabye being in the van as they turned into the back, two lengths ahead of Ythan, which was followed by Sir Romeo, Cotsfield, Wasteland, Palace, and Red Flush, with Invictus last. There was little alteration during the next half-mile and Miss Hushabye showed the way across the top from Ythan, Cotsfield end Sir Romeo. Ythan got a run on the fence to lead Miss Hushabye into the straight, with Sir Romeo, Cotsfield. Wasteland. Invictus, Palace and Red Flush following. There was a good finish and Miss Hushabye looked likely until Wasteland. and then Invictus and Sir Romeo, joined issue, Wasteland doing best to win from Invictus by a length and ahalf. Sir Romeo was a length away from Invictus, and Rod Flush was fourth, followed by Ythan, Cotsfield, Miss Hushabye, and Palace. Foreign Queen Scores. The Wharangi Handicap was a fourhorse race. Foreign Queen and Royal Hunting carried over four-fifths of the machine, the former being favourite by one ticket. Foreign Queen (rails), Royal Hunting and Navaho (outside) galloped in line to the half-mile peg, where Royal Hunting and Navaho went to the front, with Foreign Queen a length away. This was the order into the straight. Voitre then took Foreign Queen up on the outer and a good finish was indicated. At the distance Royal Hunting, Navaho and Foreign Queen were almost in line, but the favourite went away over the last, bit to win from Roval Hunting by two lengths, Navaho being a length away from the second horse, and Eminent close up. Gladium Completes a Double. Gladium, the Maiden winner, was produced again in the concluding event and, installed favourite, duly comnleted the double. Pheon and Acrelict wore badly away and High Society led out from Aitua, Moorwyn and Gladium. Moorwyn was the actual leader into the straight from Hybiscus, High Society, Wasteland, Pheon and Galdium. In a good finish the favourite asserted his claim and won by two lengths from Pheon, with Wasteland three-quarters of a length away, third. Next to finish wore Hybiscus, High Society, and Whetu-Ma. The live furlongs record for Australia and New Zealand is jointly held by Machine Gun and Paganclli at 58sce. Machine Gun made his record as a four-year-old under 11.5 in 1904 at Riccarton, and Paganelli put up the same figures as a two-year-old'under 8.8 in 1927 at Tren tham —both remarkable performances. America’s best five is the 55 3-sscc. of Penrose, under 7.12. Departure of Autopay. As the Monowai, being on the American run, cannot take horses to Sydney, tho date of Autopay’s departure on his third Epsom mission has been brought forward to August 3, writes 11 Rangatira.” fie will travel on the Wanganella, leaving Wellington on that date, anil he will again go over in charge of the stable’s head lad, C.
