SHOWER OF LEAD

BARONET HURT IN EIRE. WIFE UNABLE TO SAVE JEWELS Both Sir Fortescue Flannery, Bart., and his wife narrowly escaped serious injury when fire destroyed a wing of Wethersfield Manor, their beauttiful home near Braintree, Essex, on a recent Saturday night. When thc alarm was given Lady Flannery rushed into her bedroom to recover her jewellery, but was beaten back by the flames. The roof crashed in. A shower of molten lead fell on Sir Fortescue as he was directing firefighting operations. He was slightly burned on tho hand and foot. Mr. Augustine Courtauld, tho young Arctic explorer, who was rescued from the Greenland Ice Cap about 18 months ago, helped the firemen and organised volunteer assistance. Sir Fortescue, who is 81, said: °My wife and I wore alone in the house when tho fire started—apparently in the roof over a bedroom. “Wo saw sparks falling from thc ceiling of tho drawing room, and the fire alarm bell at the manor was rung to warn the village folk. They responded magnificently.”
