A SUDDEN ENDING VARG\ DEFEATS PEREIRA PORTUGUESE KNOCKED OUT TWO FALLS TO ONE SECURED In a bout which came to an abrupt conclusion in the sixth round Count Varga, of Hungary, won from Al Pereira, of Portugal, by two falls to one in the Wanganui Opera House on Saturday night. Varga gained a fall in the third round with a headlock and body press and a minute after the fifth round commenced Al Pereira retaliated by a boilv picss from which the Count, was unable to extricate himself. In the next round Al Pereira stunned himself following flying tackles and Varga had no dilliculty in defeating his man. Al Pereira did not recover for several moments and bled from the mouth profusely. Tho match was notable for its flying tackles by Al Pereira and n certain amount of fisticuffs. On one occasion Al Pereira flung Varga out of tho ring and applied his foot to keep him out. At times the men appeared to be excited. The management of the evening’s sport was in the same capable hands as on previous occasions, Mr. J. Pawson making the announcements, while Mr. Alox Anderson officiated in the ring, where he was given a great, deal to do. The four amateur preliminaries were of good standard and produced somegood bouts. The referee was Mr. J. Manley. The Big Bout

Count Varga (Hungary), was announced at 14st. 81b., and Al Pereira (Portugal), at 15st. 41b. The pair soon got to work. Securing headlocks, Varga dumped Pereira four tifnes in succession, but Pereira obtained a head scissors and armbar and had Varga in difficulties for a time, but the Count extricated himself and obtained a semi-crucifix. Varga dumped Pereira and secured a headlock, but the latter kicked his way out. Pereira butted Varga Throe times with flying tackles. Early in the second session Varga rccured a body scissors and arm-bar, which he converted to a short-arm scissors. Pereira, countered with a head scissors. Eventually Varga secured a head scissors also and the pair rolled through the ropes. Pereira secured a flying body scissors and dropped Varga to the mat, where he obtained a facebar as well as the body scissors. Varga, after a strenuous time, managed to kick his way clear. Again Pereira went, through the ropes with a flying tackle. On resumption ho obtained a reverse wristlock, but. Varga countered. As the gong sounded Varga picked up his opponent and dumped him hard. Early in the third round Varga was subjected to several flying tackles, which connected. In retaliation he picked up Pereira and threw him out of tho ring. Pereira appeared rattled and struck Varga on the jaw with his forearm. Varga retaliated with a straight left to the jaw. Varga went to shake hands, but Pereira ignored him and butted Varga with tfirec more flying tackles which appeared to make his opponent groggy. Varga was playing ’possum, however, and quickly secured a headlock. With a body press he obtained a fall. Tempers Frayed Round four opened with Varga dump ing his opponent with, a headlock. Pereira got up but Varga dumped him three times iu succession. Pereira brought his opponent to tho mat and obtained a splits and a toe hold. Varga countered with a toe hold, but missel and Pereira made for a keylock. Varga •ecured a face-bar, which ho converted into a hamnierlock, but his opponent broke clear. Varga secured a headlock, but his opponent broke clear after punching Varga in the stomach and tempers appeared to be frayed. Varga again connected with a left to the jaw. Pereira retaliated with a flying tackle which connected, another which missed and three more which connected. From a further flying tackle fercira secured a body scissors, which he converted to a wristlock and then a body scissors and a face-bar which Varga countered with an armbar. Varga secured a shortarm scissors, which lie held till Pereira countered with a head and aru, ecissors. At the beginning of the fifth rouuu Varga secured a headlock aud arm-bar end threw Pereira out of the ring. With a series of flying tackles, which connected, Pereira had Varga on the mat in a dazed condition and secured a fall with a body press. Hound six proved tu be the last and was only of a few minutes’ duration. Varga, with a series of headlocks, dumped Pereira four times. Pereira went for his opponent with flying tackles, lie connected three times, but in the fourth Varga stepped aside and Pereira went, head on into the ropes. He rebounded into the ring where h'lay dazed. Varga hesitated for a few seconds, undecided what he should do, until the crowd urged him to go for n jail, which he did, tuereny securing the referee's decision.

Amateur Bouts K. Gowan (10.4), won from E. Noble. (9.8), by two falls to none. Both came froni a headlock and body press in the first and third rounds. It, was an even end interesting bout. U. Matson (1(1.9), won froni P. Gowan (11.9), by a fall in the third round as w result ol a headlock and body press. The I no men were evenly matched and infused much vigour into the bout, Gowan using a certain amount of showmanship. J. Podjursky (10.8), drew with W. Connors (11.4), neither man securing a fall. It was the most popular of the amateur bouts and was well received. M. Podjursky (10.6), drew with T Thomas (10.1), in another good, even bout, neither man being able to gain an advantage over his opponent.
