RANGITIKEI THIRD GRADE

DEFEAT OF WANGANUI. The Rangitikei third grade representatives defeated Wanganui fourth grade representatives at Marton Park on Saturday by 22 points to 3. The game was bright in parts but Rangitikei wore much too strong and may have scored even more heavily had the rain not come down to make the ball hard to handle. Marr, Bending and Wysocki’all shone among the Rangitikei backs, while White, at full-back, was very safe and played well. The greens’ best forwards were Stantiall, Gibbs and Price. James, Wild, Farrell and Pedley were Wanganui’s best players. The Play Rangitikei attacked from tho kickoff, a good passing bout ending when Simons kicked on. The greens continuing to attack carried on, another good movement breaking down through Campbell missing his pass. Wanganui came back and were awarded a free kick well out, Sherlock making a very creditable attempt at goal, his kick just falling short. Another good passing rush by Rangitikei saw the greens in Wanganui’s territory again, and following an infringement Rowe goaled splendidly for Rangitikei. Rangitikei 3, Wanganui 0. Wanganui were hard pressed for a while, Gilbert bringing relief by clearing. Shortly after Gilbert again had to save, and instead of kicking, sidestepped his man well, and made for the corner. He was held up, however, before he could cross, and Rangitikei cleared. Another free to Wanganui saw Sherlock goal finely, making the score, 3 all. Marr was feeding tho green backs well but their handling was faulty, and many good movements were spoilt. A long kick by Rokowski, and a mistake by Gilbert of hanging on instead of lining saw Rangitikei near t. blues’ line. A forward scramble ended in Price crossing. Rowe missed with the kick. Rangitikei 6, Wanganui 3. Rangitikei were now having the best of the play and kept in Wanganui’s half. Nuttall missed a free for Rangitikei. A pasing bout by the Rangitikei backs saw Campbell finish off by scoring at the corner. Rowe again failed to convert. Rangitikei 9, Wanganui 3. Play was up and down until halftime, the score being the same when the whistle blew. Rangitikei kept up the pressure upon resumption, two free kicks in quick succession bringing relief to Wanganui. From a scrum Marr worked the blind side to let Kerr away. The winger ran past the Wanganui fullback, but was tackled from behind. Owing to tho greasy ball (the rain was now falling fairly solidly) the players were finding it hard to handle so that play was now not as attractive as it had been previously. Despite the greasy ball, however, Rowe found the posts with a fine kick when Rangitikei were awarded a free. Rangitikei 12, Wanganui 3. Wanganui took a turn in attack and the greens had to force. Bending came through in a nico solo effort carrying play back to blues’ territory. Wysocki carrred on, the ball going over tho line for Stantiall to force. Nuttall converted. Rangitikei 17, Wanganui 3. Wanganui were now finding it hard to keep the greens out, and soon after Gibbs crossed for Rangitikei. Nuttall converted. Rangitikei 22, Wanganui 3. Rangitikei were still attacking when the final whistlo blew, with the score: Rangitikei 22, Wanganui 3. Mr. G. Thompson was the referee.
