WANGANUI WEST CLUB PAST SEASON’S ACTIVITIES. THE ANNUAL REPORT. Thc annual meeting of the Wanganui West Bowling Club will be held next Wednesday night. The following is'the annual report to be presented by Capt. J, White, president of the club:— “The green was opened on September 24 by the Deputy Mayor, Mr. F. Symes, with a few remarks on bowling in general and the good fellowship it, afforded. He declared the green open by asking Mrs. White, the president’s wife, to throw the first jack, which was well done. Thc day was fine and the green engaged to its full capacity, there being a record attendance of visitors and ladies. The ladies’ committee provided a dainty afternoon tea and an enjoyable afternoon was spent by all. “You will note by the balance-sheet the financial position and I might add the club is to be congratulated in keepin" on the right side of tho ledger. Unfortunately the membership was not as great as anticipated on account of thc economic depression but I am pleased to say the average week-end attendance was maintained throughout the season, which has been a great assistance to our finance. “The Harkness Cup Tournament and tho Aggregate Competition were keenly contested for during the season, espcci ally the games in the.final which was hard fought out to the finish. The winners of the Harkness Cup tournament arc W. Collins, A. Seeling, T. O’Keefe and S. C. Simmonds. The winners of the aggregate competition (Ponsonby system) are E Pond, A. Seeling, H. White and W. Moir. “The club took part in all Centre games, the Senior Shield, Willis Shield and Nixon, Cup. Although not successful in winning any of those, enjoyable games were had in, the playing. The Kccsing Cup and the Hum Cup was competed for, the club winning tho Hurn Cup once. On two occasions while competing for these cups rain set in and we had to forfeit. “Christmas Tournament.—We were reperesented in this with two rinks. In the Easter tournament we were represented with three rinks. In tho open pairs tournament two pairs, White and Wilson, Brown and Anthony, represented the club. In the Champion of Champion Singles we w’ere represented by W. McKay. In the Gordon Pairs Castlecliff was represented by two pairs, Lamont and Wilson, Brown and Anthony. “The Harkness Cup mid-week pairs competition, between Wanganui East and Castlecliff, was competed for from time to time during the season, Wanganui East retaining cups for thc season. Club games.—l am pleased to say all these games were finalised, due to the untiring efforts of the selector, Mr. W. Moir. I tender him the thanks of the club for the splendid manner he carried out his duties. “The following are some club re, suits:—Club fours (Ponsonby system),' E. Pond, P. McKillop, T. O’Keefe and A. Wilson; chib pairs, J. Enni s and T. Brown; senior singles,’ W. McKay; junior singles, E. Pond; handicap singles (McSkimming trophy), W. Moir; Russell Shoes (challenge senior pairs), McKillop and Wilson; Hurley buttons (challenge junior pairs), Pond and Dandy; Gibson trophy (challenge singles), competed for but not won outright. ‘‘The weather during trie season ou th 0 whole was favourable for bowling and no doubt was much appreciated. 1 wish especially to thank all thc bowlers who gave us their support during the week-ends and on other occasions and trust they will be able to give the same generoug support in the coming season. I convey the thanks of the club to thc Press for their kindness in publishing all notes and other matter of interest to our club for the past season. 1 have pleasure in conveying tho thanks of the club to Mr. A. Wil son, green superintendent, and Mr. 11. Watson, grcenkccpcr, for the very efli cient playing condition tho green was kept in during the season. 1 would like to remind all members, now the economic conditions are fast improving, to make every endeavour to continue their membership and endeavour to obtain new members, as the playing strength of the club requires building up. I thank all members for their assistance in making the past season an enjoyable one and also those members for doing odd jobs and keeping down expenses. The green was closed on April 30. with fine weather the ladies having charge of the day. There was a record number of bowlers and ladies to enjoy thc hospitality they had provided. I wish to particularly thank all the ladies who kindly assisted on the opening and closing days, in making these days enjoyable ones for everybody, also for their attendance at weekends during the season in looking after the (dub’s welfare. The week-end trophies were donated by Air. A. Anderson and Mr. J. White, and presented to tho winners on closing the 1932-33
