ROAD METALLING

PATEA COUNTY WORK ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr. L. F. Row) submitted the following report for the month, at the meeting of the Patea County Council on Tuesday, those present being Crs. Belton (chairman), Watkins, Johnston, Back, Peat, Lupton, Scown, Watt and Hurley: — Kapara Riding. —The metalling programme on the Lower Valley Road is now completed and all new work has been rolled. Further widening of the formation is now in progress. Tho timber work on the Piraunui Bridge has been cleared of all decayed sapwood, and a thorough inspection has shown the bridge to bo in excellent order. The Mangapuna Stream Bridge is in urgent need of repairs aud replacements and it is proposed to proceed with this work at an early date. Moumahaki Riding.—A length of 13 J chains of new metalling has been completed on the Lower Ukotuku Road. I'he first two suspension bridges across the Waitotara River have been thoroughly overhauled and although they are fairly old structures, they are now in good order. The sandy length of the Waverlcy Beach Highway between the lliupuku and Tuko Roads has been graded up and clayed. Waverlcy Riding.—Five chains of new metalling on tho Mangatangi Road and one chain on the Hunter Road arc now completed. General maintenance an.l grading have been at tended to and all roads are in fair order. Otoia East. —A start has been made with the formation contract on the Otauto Road. The upper section of the Kaharoa Road has been sanded for some distance and is now quite good in wet weather. Otoia West.—No work other than routine maintenance and metal patching has been done during the month and nil roads are now in good order. Main Road.—Surface patching and general repairs have been carried out between Patea and Waverlcy. An early start will be made with chipping and painting the steel span on the Patea Bridge.
