N.Z. TRADE WITH RUSSIA

Sir, —There has been a certain amount of controversy in the past regarding the volume of trade between Russia and New Zealand and, in fairness to Russia, wc must point out that the figures so far quoted do not include that country’s purchases of wool from New Zealand. During tho two seasons, 1928-29 and 1929-30, we bought for Russia 6589 bales of wool, of a total value of £140,579 19s 9d, and wc have reason to believe that business i§ likely to be renewed in the near future. The control of all of our purchases lay in Moscow, but for some reason, probably convenience in transport, the wools wore shipped from here to Bremen, and this no doubt accounts for tho fact that the business has not been officially recognised as Russian. We must add, further that the financial arrangements were entirely to our satisfaction, and wore not hampered by an irksome restrictions. This country, like all others, needs competition, and when Russia again purchases wool in New Zealand it will certainly, improve prices over the classes wool in which they arc interested —mainly crossbreds and halfbreds. In the above-mentioned seasons, Russia bought many thousands of bales of all descriptions of wool in Australia through our branches there.—Yours faithfully, A. M. TARTAKOVER, Manager, H. Dawson, Sons and Co., Ltd. Wellington, May 16, 1933.
