BULLS

SOCIAL GATHERINGS. This evening the Bulls Old Scouts’ Association will hold their annual dinner, followed by a dance in the Town Hall supper room. Old boys of the Bulls Troop generally come from near and far for these gatherings, which are most enjoyable. On Tuesday night the school committee organised a dance in aid of the school funds but owing to counter attractions the attendance was not as large as expected. Mr. C. H. Edwards kindly lent his radio receiving set, and the programme of dance music put over from Palmerston North came through in full volume. Those who patronised the function had a very pleasant evening. The Ohakea Social Committee also took advantage of the broadcast of dance music on Tuesday evening, and a dance held in the aid of the funds of the Ohakea Miniature Rifle Club was well attended. Monte Carlos were won by Miss Dixon and Mr. Edgar Ingram, and by Miss N. and Mr. J. Freeklington. Mrs. H. Ellery won the ladies’ euchre prize after tieing with Mesdames Parsons and J. Capstick, and Mr. G. Robinson won the gent’s trophy. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs. Robinson and to Mr. Arthur Smith. In addition to the wireless music (which came over splendidly), extras were played by Mrs. Redpath, Miss Gracie, Mrs. Freeklington and Miss Freeklington, the dance concluding at 2 a.m. GENERAL NEWS. The following have been selected to represent the Bulls Miniature Rifle Club in a postal shoot for the Tisdall Cup, to be fired on Friday night: S. Sharp, C. M. Broughton, R. Hart, M. Banks and T. Prichard. Great sympathy is felt for Mr. Robert Clark, of this township, whose brother, Daniel, was drowned in the Wanganui River on Tuesday morning. A number of relatives from Bulls paid their last respects to a pioneer of Carnarvon and Waitohi, the late Mrs. Eleanor Penny, whose funeral took place at Sanson yesterday. The deceased lady was 83 years of age, and leaves two sons, Mr. Campbell Penny, of Palmerston North, and Mr. William Penny, of Manawatu Heads. Mr. J. H. Whisker, of Parewanui, is a nephew. The Bulls bowling and croquet greens are receiving attention at present, topdressing, manuring and weeding chiefly, and next season they should play even better than during the past summer. Both greens had to stand up to a good deal of playing, and it says much for the work of the respective caretakers that the lawns were kept in such good order.
