LEVEL-CROSSING SMASH

MANAIA WOMAN KILLED ACCIDENT AT MATANGI [Per Press Association. I AUCKLAND, May 1.7 A fatal railway crossing collision occurred at Alatangi, six miles from Hamilton this afternoon, when a motor-car driven by John James Patterson, of Manaia, Taranaki, was struck by tho Frankton-Cambridge train. A passenger m the car, Mrs., N. Jones, aged 35 years, wife of Mr. Narkett Jones, a farmer of Manaia, received grave head injuries and died within half an hour. The driver, Air. Patterson, escaped wit a cuts about the face and shock. The engine struck the motor-car with terrific force on the side where Mrs. Jones was naing, and the motor-car, a large closed model, was carried for about 20 yards on the cowcatcher of the engine and was then thrown aside reduced almost to wreckage. The train was pulled up smartly and Mrs. Jones and Air. Patterson were extricated from the wreck age. Airs. .Tones succumbed to her injuries while being given attention. Air. Patterson, who was suffering mainly from shock, was not sent to hospital. Air. Patterson, who owns extensive dairy farms at Alanaia and also near Aforrinsville, was travelling from Taranaki to his Waikato farm. His only passenger was Airs. Jones, who intended visiting her sister at Te Aroha. Airs. Jones is survived by her husband and two young children.
