TOURING AUSTRALIA NEW ZEALAND AT PRACTICE. CRITICS IMPRESSED. SYDNEY, May 17. The Sydney papers, after witnessing the New Zealand soccer players at practice, are impressed by the fact that nearly every man is an accomplished sharpshooter. The way in which the goalie, Zuill, has handled his job has led critics to compare him in brilliance with tho local ’keeper, McNab. Kay is described as a typical match winner. WANGANUI ASSOCIATION FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY. NOTES FROM THE JUNIORS. The soccer matches on Saturday will consist of the second games in the final round of the Shield competition. Athletic will meet the Mills on No. 1 ground. As tho competition now lies with these two teams this should be a rousing game. Athletic’s chances of obtaining the Shield are, however, best. In the other game Eastbrooke oppose Thistle on No 2 ground. Both teams are anxious to improve their position and should provide a pleasing game. Junior Topics. In the junior games on Saturday tho fourth grade winners were Marists and Thistle at the expense of Eastbrooke and Rangers respectively. In the Marist—Eastbrooke game it was a pity Eastbrooke were short as they put up a great fight, and had they been, equal in strength the score might not have read as it did. Healey, in goal, played a great game for Eastbrooke, Webb being an outstanding player. Little McKenna was the shining light in the Marist ranks. In the fourth grade there was only one game played. In this Thistle had to bow to Rangers. A meeting of the junior committee was held on Monday night and the business discussed will be of interest to the boys. In future all players must stick to their grade. In connection With the Primary schools tournament, which is to be held in Wanganui in August and in which there will be teams from Wellington. Manawatu, Taranaki and Wanganui competing, the following committee was appointed to make arrangements: Messrs. E. Dear, E. Bell, Smith and Ward. In connection with an article which

appeared in these columns last week, there seems to have been created an idea that the sliding tackle was quite permissible. It is certainly not mentioned separately in any law governing the game as punishable tactics, but it comes under the heading of dangerous play, and as such must be punished. Saturday’s junior games will be:— Third Grade.—Rangers v. East brooke on Williams Park: Marist v. Thistle on Victoria Park. Fourth Grade.—Thistle v. Marist on Williams Park. Fifth Grade.—Rangers v. Marist on Williams Park; Athletic v. Aramoho on Victoria Park.
