Present: Councillors W. E. Barber (chairman), J. F. McKelvie, J. Boyce, W. E. Pearce, J. H. Perrett, A. N. Morcom, and D. W. Reid Inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From Palmerston North Hospital Board advising that Manawatu County contributions for current year were as follows: Maintenance £2127 5s sd; capital £l2l 3s sd.—Received. From Sluggish River Drainage Board asking council to undertake construction of pipe culvert and floodgate at Rangitikei. The board to pay cost. — Agreed to. From Manakau County Council regarding difficulty experienced by local bodies in collecting rates and asking for statistical information. —Agreed to supply. From Manawatu Reliance Co-op. Dairy Co. drawing attention to excessive speed of motor lorries passing through Rangiotu.—Referred to traffic inspector. Rrom Rangiotu School Committee asking that action be taken to restrict speed of motor traffic past the school. —Referred to traffic inspector. From Mr F. S. Easton regarding unformed Kuri Kuri Road. The county engineer stated that the position was that spoil was being taken from the County Road and the practice would have have to be stopped. Engineer’s Report. The county engineer reported on works in progress as follows: Sandon Riding.—Surface metal has been spread on Speedy’s Line. Bridge deckings have been repaired on and Speedy’s and Taylor’s Lines. Watertables have been cleaned out on Cemetery Road. Grading has been carried out on several roads in the riding. Mt. Stewart.—Two old wooden culverts are being replaced with concrete pipes, watertables are being cleaned and surface metal spread on Rakihou Road. The banking work on Kawa Kawa Road is nearly completed. Mt. Stewart-Halcombe and Kawa Kawa Roads have been graded. Waitohi. —Surface metal is being spread on Taipo Road. An old culvert on Penny’s Line has been replaced with concrete pipes. Rowe’s, Banks-Waitohi, Penny’s, Taipo ana Taipo-Awahuri Roads have been graded. * Rongotea.—The usual maintenance has been continued. The following roads have been graded: Green, Banks, Sanson’s, Kaimaterau, Lern’s, Mill and McLean’s. The metalling of some of the roads in this riding is overdue, but owing to the flooded state of the Oroua River it has been impossible. The work will be undertaken as soon as conditions improve. Kawa Kawa.—General maintenance has been continued. Several 'roads have been graded. Sand blows have been fastened on Killow’s Line. Metalling is being undertaken as soon as the river is in a condition to be worked. Carnarvon. —Grading has been continued on Puki Puki, Rasina, Soldiers, River 'Bank and Koputaru Roads. Metalling operations have ceased owing to the pits being flooded. The Ocean Beach Road has been damaged by flood and will be repaired as soon as possible. Awahou. —Drain clearing has been continued on No. 2 Line. Himitangi Station Road. No. 2 Line and Sanatorium Roads have been graded. Three small bridges on Kari Kari Road have been repaired. These bridges arc now in fair condition, but will have to be replaced with concrete pipes in the near future Main Drain Road.—This road has been graded and 220 cubic yards of surface metal has been spread. Afore metal is required to finish this road but cannot be obtained until the river at Karo re has subsided. Main Highways.—All metalled surfaced main highways have been graded. Surface metal has been spread on Whirokino, Himatangi-Sanson, Himai tangi, Rangiotu, Rongotea-Feilding Roads. The Shannon Bridge painting work is progressing satisfactorily. The. whole of the scraping and the priming coat is almost complete, only the oxide covering coat now remaining to be done. The work has been hampered by the bad weather. The report on the Whirokino Bridge is not yet Io hand. The usual draining and maintenance work is being continued on highwavs. Noxious Weeds.—Several notices for removal of noxious weeds have been sent out. Further cases have been taken tn the Bulls Court and others will be taken next Court day. Tramway’s Report. The tramway manager reported that the months working shows a credit balance of £9. The chief items of traffic, were as follows: Minerals and manure, 178 tons; merchandise, 6| Ions; eggs 58 crates; sheep and pigs. 11 trucks; metal. 88 trucks; timber, 2700 feet.
