RUGBY

METROPOLITAN UNION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Wanganui Metropolitan Rugby Union was held last night. Mr. J. Moye presided and there were present Messrs. W. R. McElwain, E. Naumann, J. B. Cotterill, A. Lockett, L. Southcombe, A. Takarangi, IL Whiting, H. Dyke and A. C. Danielson. Messrs, Dyke. Whiting and Naumann reported ’ regarding the Intermediate School entering a sixth grade team. Mr. Naumann said that athe Intermediate School and the Technical College had agreed to play their teams in a special grade and he had approached the Marist Brothers with a view to them entering a team also. Word was being awaited from Mr. Carver, of the Collegiate School, as to whether teams from there would participate. The Union considered the idea a good one and it was decided to recommend that the scheme be allowed to function and that it embrace the sixth grade. As the matters were not finalised they were left in the hands of the same committee as before—Messrs. Dyke, Naumann and. Whiting.

The Classification Committee recommended against reclassifying P. Stowers (Kaierau) from senior to junior. On the motion of the chairman the recommendation was endorsed. The Wairoa Union wrote asking for a game with the Metropolitan B representatives at either Waitotara or Waverley early in the season. It was decided to fulfil the fixture as early as possible, ajid to point out that until tbo New Zealand representative fixtures are listed it would be impossible to fix an exact date. Al. Dyke moved that Meromere (Ratana), who is under suspension, but not well enough to attend tho Management Committee’s meeting, be met and dealt with by a committee next Saturday, the committee to have power to act. Messrs. Moye, Danielson and Cotterill were appointed to the committee and the motion was carried.

The protest of the Aramoho Club to the effect that senior players were playing in the junior Kaiwhaike Club was considered. It was pointed out that the Kaiwhaike Club had made application for certain players to be reclassified to junior, and through an oversight on tho Union’s part the matter had not been referred to the Classification Committee. The letter was not worded clearly enough. Kaiwhaike Club representatives were present and indicated that as the club had not had a reply to such application their executive thought itself perfectly justified in playing Murray, who had been a representative player for Wainui-a-Rua. It was also pointed out that Aramoho had played a senior man in the match under protest. A letter from Aramoho set forth the position in this connection

and admitted that a senior had been played under a misapprehension. County Club also protested against two players in the Kaiwhaike Club— Murray and Matthews (seniors). It was stated that Matthews was Winiata, whose reclassification had been applied for but no answer received. Kaiwhaike Club representatives withdrew and each protest was dealt with separately. It was finally decided to replay tho Aramoho v. Kaiwhaike match. With regard to the County v. Kaiwhaiko game Mr. Dyke stated that Kaiwhaike were a number of men short. He had told them that they would lose the game if tho played Murray, but rather than go out short they took him on. Later, the rest of the team turnedup and Kaiwhaike won. They had been told before they went on what would happen. In view of the circumstances the game was awarded to County. Murray, Winiata, Potae and Patea, of Kaiwhaike, were granted junior classification, but the Classification Committee was instructed to view their play and to report. The case of Ratana, another Kaiwhaike player, was left to the Classification Committee to deal with. Details of the seven-a-side tourament on Juno 3, which is being promoted in the interests of the finances of individual clubs, were discussed. Each club is to be given 200 tickets to start with, the proceeds of which are to go ’to the clubs selling them. Ticket selling finishes on the night of June 2. Gate taking are to be devoted to paying expenses and any balance will be allocated equally among the clubs. The matter was left to Messrs. Whiting and Cotterill, Mr. Moye congratulating them and the committee in charge on the progress made. Accounts totalling £l6 19s Id were passed for payment. Gate takings were reported as follows:—Marist tournament (percentage), £7; April 8, £18; April 22, £26; May 6 £29; total £BO. Last year, up to May 21, a fortnight later, ttic takings were £5O more—£l3o. There are two Saturdays to go to bring the total up to last year’s average and the position was considered satisfactory.

Aramoho Club asked that Donald Roydhouse be transferred to County. This was agreed to. Mr. Southcombe was appointed manager of the team to travel to Taihape on May 20.
