WAVERLEY

FOOTBALL Wet weather made playing conditions difficult on football grounds in the Wairoa Sub-union’s territory last Saturday. But hi spite of the "dampness and cold, one of the largest and keenest crowd of spectators watched the game between Waverley and Rau-, rau on the Waverley grounds. The Raurau team,, which is formed entirely of Maoris, had not been defeated, nor had Waverley. The Ngutuwera visitors fielded a strong and swift back line, as well as some very able and hefty forwards, but in the first half •f the game, Waverley proved, themselves the superior by scoring 18 to Raurau’s nil. The home team continued scoring in the second half, adding an other 15. while Raurau were perhaps somewhat fortunate in securing three points from a free kick. The game concluded with the scores 31—3. These would indicate that the Waverley team had matters all their own way, but the game was a hard-fought one, and Raurau gave Waverley a hard- tussle to obtain their tries. This game placed Waverley in the lead from Raurau, the local team not having suffered a de feat so far this season, which is really only in keeping with last season.
