TYPE OF LOTTERY
SHOOTING TO DECIDE PRIZE. INTER ESTING DECISION. 1 Per Press Association. J WELLINGTON, May 5. In his reserved judgment," Mr. Page, S.M., has decided declaring illegal schemes for the disposal of motorears by a type of lottery which involves a shooting competition at the drawing. The decision is the result of a ease concerning a' scheme to raise funds to send the I’oHh Nicholson Silver Band to Dunedin for the contests. W. J. Spittai and "A. Buckley,’ representing the A grade band contest fluid committee, were defendants. The magistrate said that skill was entailed in shooting, but he held that so far as the buyers of tickets were concerned the matter was decided solely bychance, and the scheme camo within the statute. The magistrate was asked to impose a substantial penalty. He fined Spittai 115 and adjourned Bueklcy’s case for three weeks, his view being that there should be only one penalty and if the matter was finished in that Court he would convict and discharge Bucklcv.
