HOAX ON WORKLESS
NON-EXISTENT JOB A large number of unemployed men, living in various parts of East London, were recently the victims of an apparent hoax. An East London newspaper published an advertisement stating: “Wanted, a Strong Man, Fare Will be Paid,” with an address m Knightsbridge Gardens, North London Road, Romfprd. As a result applicants from all parts of East London began to arrive at the house at an early hour, and they continued to arrive at intervals during tho day. Some stated that they had experienced difficulty 5n raising the money for the journey, and while most of the men accepted the position philosophically, a few demanded the payment of their faros from the innocent occupant of the house. Mrs. Clover, the householder, repudiated all knowledge of the advertisement, and she could only assume that its insertion was a hoax played upon either the unemployed or horself. After Mrs. Clover had become nervously in-
disposed from the effects ot the constant stream of callers, a notice was placed on the street-door stating thnt the post was “filled.” Until late in tho evening men continued to arrive, but they turned away on reading the notice.
