TROTTING

WANGANUI CLUB SATURDAY’S MEETING ■ LIST OF ACCEPTANCES. Very satisfactory acceptances have been received by the Wanganui Trotting Club for the annual meeting, to be held on Saturday. The full list of acceptors is as follows: —

WANGANUI MEETING KEEN CONTESTS PROMISED LEADING TRAINEES TO CLASH (Special Trotting Writer;. The Wanganui Trotting Club hub every reason to feel gratiiied at the response tendered by owners and train ers for the annual fixture on Satur day, which promises to be a very successful function. The most notable defection from the fine list of entries received is the Tamahere team owned by Air. Wilfred Johnstone, out as he sent his horses home after the Hawera meeting, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the penalty placed on Kohewah on the second day —which, incidentally, was correct in view of Sphinx’s rehandicap the first day—it is not surprising that the Waikato horses are missing from the acceptance list, in spite of this the fields arc substantially strong and in the majority of races the prospects of three dividends being paid are very favourable. As predicted, the two chief races, the Wanganui Handicap and the Morton Handicap, have filled remarkably well and these events atone will be well worth the reasonable price of admission. Fine Two Miles Field In the big two miles event there will be a great clash between wellperformed pacers from all parts of the Dominion. The promoted Raider and the speedy, consistent Free Logan will represent the far north, and they make a sturdy pair for the best of the others to tackle. The fine young improver, Laminate. well known to local fans, will worthily uphold the prestige of the East Coast, while representing this side of the island are Teri Kingi, Smooger, Whippet and Lady Coronado, all of whom have been displaying sound form of late. Warm opposition will come from the South Island, which is supplying three well-performed two milers in Belle o’ Mine, Linelle and Special Sun. Every horse carded for the principal race is entitled to con siderat irn and with such a strong and well-balanced field the machine shouh 1 indicate that instead of one or two candidates looking the 4 ‘ goods,’* fully half a dozen will receive even support. Some Smart Sprinters The same condition applies to the shorter Morton Handicap, in which a

good field of rare and smart sprinters is engaged. With the exception of Ulm and Rector, representatives from Canterbury and Hawke’s Bay respectively, all those listed in this event will be seen out in the Wanganui Handicap, and the form in the two-mile clash will give speculators a useful line when it comes to making a selection of favouritism in the “Recovery” Stakes, the last race of the day. The two events for novice and improving pacers, the Innovation and Autumn Handicap, have also drawn large-sized fields, and while the competitors at the rear of the handicap have winning form on their side, several novices from the limit, who will be improved by racing at Manawatu and Hawcra. will make things decidedly interesting for their rivals who have been a little more successful in their ventures.

High Class Trotters In spite of the present dearth, throughout the North Island of straight-out trotters, the events fur this class of contestant have filled beyond expectations. Some good novices will test their more highly-qualified opponents, and even if they fail to down such fine trotters as Nell Volo, Sphinx, Hue Coronado and Billy Bingen, they will at least give them a “fright” and mistakes on the part of tho backmarkers will give supporters of the novices a fine chance of collecting a really good price. The back-markers, who are finc-actioned trotters, will be kept stepping at their best and the exhibition of clean unhoppled racing will be well worth a journey to see. Added to the interest in the wellperformed horses taking part on. Saturday will be the renewal of the stubborn contest for Dominion training honours between S. Donald, of Christchurch, and F. J. Smith, of Auckland. both of whom arc now leading for the coveted position. Smith, who is an ex-English reinsman, is leading New Zealand at present in the drivers’ competition and he will make a bold bid with his Wanganui team to further improve his position. Numerous other high class reinsmen will be in attendance and backers will have no cause for complaint on the score nf driving when they select their particular fancies. Then the broadcast review of th® various fields by Mr. C. E. Craig, of Auckland, will lend colour to the sport and should prove a fine guide for speculators when they arc faced with th® problem of making a final choice. There will be a wealth of high-ch«s sport provided on Saturday, when punters will witness some of tho most thrilling trotting congests yet seen in Wanganui.
