EARNINGS OF RAILWAYS

GAINS DURING FEBRUARY REVENUE SHOWS INCREASE £Bl,lOO ABOVE LAST YEAR WELLINGTON, April 8. A gain of £28,203 in net revenue was ‘’made by the railways in the fourweekly period ended March 4, com pared with results for the corresponding period last year. The net earnings were £155,635, compared with £127,432 for the same four weeks in 1931-32. The net gain for the current financial year is now £Bl,lOO. The gross earnings for the period > were £567,535, which is £13,204 more than in the corresponding period last year. Expenses amounted to £411,900. a reduction of £14,999. Operating revenue in the North Island was £291,441, a decline of £5092. Expenses were £218,739, a reduction of £18,049. Net earnings increased by £12,957 from £59,745 to £72,702. In the South Island icceipts were £224,644 and expenses £164,815, increases of £20,434 and £1257 respectively over the figures for last year. Net earnings increased by £19,177 to £59,829. Net revenue from miscellaneous services was £23,104, a decrease of £3931. Revenue for the 48 weeks from April 1 to March 4 was £5.496,079, a do crease of £348,602, while expenses totalling £4.756,406 show a decline bf £429,701. The net revenue of £739,673 comprises £293,000 from the North Island railways, £127,153 from the South Island railways and £<319,520 from miscellaneous services.
