BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Marton Borough Council met on Monday evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) and Crs. ‘G. B. Gregory. T. Barton, A. A. McIndoe, A. Honeyman, J. D. Gorrie, W. B. Langston, A. J. B. Sicoly and K. A. Williams, and the town clerk (Mr. C. C. McDonald). The assistant engineer of Public Works Department wrote asking for a statement of works carried out on highways in the borough for the year ending March 31, 1933, together with proposals for the future for the purposes of the annual report-—Referred to the overseer. Advice was received from the Controller of Customs advising that exemption relating to rubble under “'The •Sales Tax, 1932-33,’’ would be regarded as embracing any form of broken stone, but tarred stone or gravel was not considered to bo admissable as rubble. The Health Department wrote asking for a detailed statement of the work in the borough for tho past year ag affecting health and hygiene, for the compilation of the annual report. —Received. The managing secretary Wanganui Hospital Boarc, wrote stating that a committee consisting of Messrs A. J. B # Sicoly, A. S. Coleman, and the secretary had been set up to act in regard to charitable and accounts from the Borough and County Councils.—Agreed to. Application from the secretary of Oroua Hockey Sub-Assoeiation for the use of the western area of the Marton Park for- the 1933 season was granted. An application under section 67 of the Rating Act for half rates for tho year ending March 31, 1933, by reason of the dwelling having been unoccupied during the ydiolc of the financial year was referred to tho Financial Committee with power to act. The installation of a one-inch water service to tho Railway Hotel js to be proceeded with as soon as financial conditions are complied with. BOXING ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Marton Boxing Association will be held in the Marton Jockey Club’s rooms on Friday evening next at 7.30 o’clock. Members and intending members are cordially invited. ANZAC DAY. On account of the wet state of the ground in the Marton Park and the prevalence of colds, the Marton Borough Council decided to hold Anzae Day memorial service in the Civic Theatre which was packed to its utmost capacity, Prior to the service, tho Marton Municipal Band headed a procession from. North Broadway of returned soldiers in strong force, Marton Volunteers and Boy Scouts. Tho service opened with Kipling’s recessional, followed by prayers by the Rev. D. MeIvor and a Bible reading by Rev. Hall. The Rev. B. D. Ashcroft delivered an inspiring address on Anzae Day. A reverent silence of one minute. The Last Post, .Benediction, and the National Anthem concluded a most impressive service. A combined choir under the baton of Mr. T. Low led the singing, assisted by the Marton Municipal Band. After the services the returned soldiers were entertained at afternoon tea by the Mayoress and Councillors’ wives. At the base of the memorial in the Marton Park a number of beautiful floral tributes were placed in honour of those who fell in the Great War. RATA BACHELORS* AND SPINSTERS’ DANCE. A combined bachelors’ and spinters’ dance will bo held in tho Rata Coronation Hall on Thursday, April 27, when modern and old-time dancing will bo featured to a first-class programme of music rendered by Takarangi’s Orchestra (Wanganui).
