THIEVES’ EASY PICKINGS Detectives disguised as farmers have been employed to break up the gangs of pickpockets attending the Yorkshire, auction marts. Posing as cattle-dealers and buyers at the weekly sales the thieves rob farmers of the money with which they intend to buy stock. “Farmers are notoriously careless,” a county police official said. “They walk about the markets with their coats wide open ami often invite trouble by openly displaying a wad of notes when buying. “They scorn the use of crossed cheque books or a belt pocket lor their treasury notes. Recently some of the cleverest pickpockets in the country have been ‘working’ the sales, using powerful cars to get. clear after ‘frisk ing ’ pockets- ’ ’
