MUCH NEEDED REFORM
BRACKETING STABLEMATES i INSTANCE AT AVONDALE It is getting something of a habit for the little-fancied horse to win over the heavily-backed stablemate, and it is one of the most difficult things to | overcome. Also it is difficult to find sound reasons why horses from the one stable should not be bracketed, as is done in trotting. It is this that assists the harness sport in its popularity. An instance of this kind was recorded at Avondale on the second day. when one stable supplied the first and second horses to finish. They were Gay Sheila and Star Artist, both trained at Takanini by P. E. Pope, and the youngsters are in different ownership. Star Artist had run third to Princess Doreen and Gipsy Love in the Avondale Stakes, and on the strength of this auspicious debut she was made a little better than even money favourite, while her stablemate was neglected in the betting. The actual figures were: Star Artist £464, Gay Sheila £64. While Star Artist was third in the Avondale Stakes Gay Sheila was sixth, but she was not very far behind her stable companion in that event, after being well back at the home turn. On the second day Dinelli set a warm pace from the harrier, but a furlong from home she stopped to a walk. Then Gay Sheila hit the front and over the last little bit Star Artist challenged, but failed by three-parts of a length to reach Gay Sheila. The backers of the latter received r dividend of well on to a score, while financial followers of the favourite lost money on their investment. In this race at least it would have been of great benefit to the club had these two horses been bracketed. As it was, just over £lOOO went into the pockets of a few.
