NOTES AND COMMENTS

Racing at Awapuni on Saturday will mark the end of the hunt meet ings and leave the way open for the commencement of the" spring cam paign, . Marton Acceptances For the spring meeting of the Marton Jockey Club acceptances for all events will close at r- o'clock to-mor-row night. Wanganui Nominations Nominations for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting will close at 9 o clock to-morrow night. Her First Win.

The three-year-old filly Palantua, by Paladin from Mantua, scored her first success when she won the Vauxhall Handicap at the Otago Hunt meeting, but it should not be long before she is again on the winning list. She has inherited a lot of the brilliancy possessed by her dam and should do well among the hack sprinters as the season progresses. A patient policy has been adopted with Palantua, who has had only five starts to date, and she should repay her connections for not having overtaxed her early. Refresher’s Overdue Win. Toward the end of last season Mr. F. C. Calvert secured a two years’ lease of Refresher from Mr. G. C. Glenn, and he did no* - have long to wait for a win, as the Tea Tray gelding was successful in the Stratford Handicap at the Taranaki Hunt meeting on Saturday. Refresher’s victory was well overdue because he failed to win a race last season and had not been victorious since winning the Firing Handicap at Te Rapa in April, 1931. 111-luck seemed to follow him right through last season, when he ran some fine races, including a third in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie, and now that he has struck winning form again, he should not be long in adding to his score. He was always a genuine racehorse when trained by J. T. Jamieson and he should be a good proposition where races are pot as difficult to win as in Auckland. Earle Sande.

Earl Sande, America’s most famous jockey, who has ridden 3590 winners, is shortly to sail for France. Mr. William Ryan, an American owner, who has a large stable in France, was instrumental in persuading Sande to go there to ride, and it is probable that he will have the mount on most of Mr. Ryan’s horses.

Wonderful Bargains. In successive years the late Mr. G. D. Greenwood made two wonderful yearling purchases in Australia. First came Biplane, a son of Comedy King, for whom he gave 375 guineas. Biplane won £13,312 in prize-money, and was sold for £3OOO. Twelve months later Mr. Greenwood obtained Gloaming for 230 guineas, and won £43,100 in stakes with the famous son of The Welkin. A Good Horse. Johnnie Jason, winner of the Victoria Derby and Sydney Cup last season further proved himself as a good horse by winning over a mile at weight-for-age at Warwick Farm on Saturday. His spring imposts are Epsom Handicap 9.4, the Metropolitan 9.6, Caulfield Cup 9.0 and Melbourne Cup 9.1. Not For Fillies. No three-year-old filly has yet won the New Zealand Cup, for which the Silverado filly Berate has been nominated. Briseis (1876), Auraria (1895) and Sister Olive (1921), were three-year-old fillies when they won the Melbourne Cup. Twice Second.

Nine of Spades, who beat Dainty Ways in the two-horse hurdle race at Riccarton on August 11, had two starts at Wingatui on Saturday and finished second each time. A Growing Team. Hector Gray is getting a big team together at Takanini. In addition to Thespis, Tatyoon and Bischoff, a three-year-old gelding by Musketoon from Orma, have joined the stable. Tw< Starts, Two Wins. Arikitea, who won the Hunters’ Flat Handicap at New Plymouth on Saturday, has now had two races and two wins. He was successful in the Ladies’ Bracelet at the recent Rangit-ikei Hunt meeting. Arikitea is a seven-year-old gelding from Danilof. a half-brother by Boniform to Sasanof. Vivarini, dam of Arikitea, is by Hallowmas. Did Well. Autopuy did well in the Campbelltown Handicap at Warwick Farm on Saturday to run fourth with 9st. 101 b. on his back. He was conceding 81b. to the winner, Chatham, who was a weight-for-age victor last season. Within Three Months. It seems strange that a racing triumvirate so famous as Messrs. Greenwood. R. J. Mason and Gloaming should all have died within a period of three months. Gloaming died on May 5, Mr. Mason on May 13. and now Mr. Greenwood is dead, Emperador. One of the earliest successes of the late Mr. G. D. Greenwood as a breeder was Emperador. a sou of Charlemagne 11. and Lady Wayward. Emperador’& wins included the C.J.C. Middle Park Plate, Great Easter Handicap and Chai lenge Stakes, the Egmont Cup and Stakes, Hawera Stakes, Manawatu Stakes (twice), Palmerston North Stakes, Taranaki Stakes and Jackson Stakes (twice). Phar Lap’s Dam. The Winkie mare, Entreaty, has been sent tn the Elderslie Stud. She was accompanied by her Night Raid colt, the yearling brother to Phar Lap, and she is due to foal in a few weeks to Night Raid. Although no definite decision has been arrived at, it is prob able she will be mated with Iliad this season. Iliad, a sun of Swyuford. was a high class English racehorse, who ran secund to Bienheim in the Derby.

Cylinder’s Weight. J. H. Jcfferd is learning that Cylinder will not be thrown into any of his engagements in Australia so far as weight is concerned. In the Warwick Farm Spring Handicap Cylinder was asked to give Historic, Johnnie Jason, and Chide each 11b., Concentrate 21b., and Peter Jackson 101 b. Jcfferd scratched Cylinder on the appearance of the weights. It looks as if ho is being calold upon to pay dearly for his defeat of Nightmarch in the Stead Cup of 1930. On that occasion he beat Nightmarch by a head in the slow time of 2min. 11 2-ssec. Much of the credit of his win that day was due to the riding of H. Gray, but tho Australian handicappers are not concerned with that aspect of tho case, for it was. at that time, a great feat to beat the Night Raid horse Sil vermine.

Silvermine does not appear to be getting any better, writes “Hurry On,” and it would seein that his trainer, J. Brown, will have to place him very carefully if he is to pay his way on the flat this season. He looked very fit on Saturday and had every chance in both his races, but the best that he could do was to finish a moderate second on each occasion. In the mile race he was conceding tho winner, Orby’s Choice, nearly 2st., and it may be wise to see what that form is really worth before writing him off. It is stated that Silvermine is to be tried over the hurdles and it will be interesting to see how he takes to the new game. Racehorses for India.

A consignment of 20 racehorses, the majority for Bombay owners, but others for Calcutta and Madras, was dispatched from London on July 18. Among the number were the Frenchbred Signifier, who was successful at Derby, and Potehim, a winner at Leicester, both of whom were formerly owned by the ex-Aucklander, Air. Boydio Davis. Tho Aga Khan and Prince Aly Khan each sent two and the others were mostly three and four-year-olds. Sporting Life says it is satisfactory to note that the exportation of hotroughbreds still flourishes and no doubt some of the animals will add to their reputations during the next Indian racing

Lord Glanely. Lord Glanely, who plays such a leading part in English racing both as an owner and a breeder, is a native of (Devonshire. He began his business life —as William James Tatcm—in a Cardiff shipping office and now has wide shipping and coal-mining interests. He was created a baronet in 1916 and raised to the peerage in 1918.

Carbine’s Granddaughter. Lord Woolaviugton, who recently purchased the Oaks winner Brulette, has now bought Seaweed, her dam, ami also dam of Hotweed, who won the Grand Prix du Paris and the French Derby. Seaweed is a sixteen-year-old daughter of Spearmint and Seadune, by Ayrshire. She was acquired together with her fine yearling colt by Bruleur, who is named Hotspur, and is a full brother to Hotweed and Brulette. Seaweed has a colt-foal by Finglas, and is again in foal to the sou of Bruleur.

New Zealand Cup. When Nightmarch won tho New Zea land Cup in 1930 there was a fixed minimum of 9st. 61b. There is no limit this time. Ho was awarded 9st. 101 b. in the Melbourne Cup, run over the same distance, but with a 6st 71b minimum instead of the 7st in the New Zealand Cup. Weights arc due on September 26. By Nigger Minstrel. Carfex, winner of the Opunakc Scurry at New Plymouth last Saturday, is a three-year-old gelding by Nigger Minstrc] from Crepitation, a half-sister to the 1928 Avondale Cup victress Bisox. Carfex had only one run last season, when he ran unplaced at Hawera, but ho is evidently fairly useful. On Saturday ho and Merry Way, who was second, finished well clear of the others, and the form was made to appear ail the bettor when Merry Way afterwards won the Urenui Hack Handicap.
