CANADIAN TRADE.
THE Canadian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, having returned to Montreal, has told a Canadian audience that New Zealand is purchasing from Canada instead of from the United States of America. He has stated that Canada is replacing the United States in supplying automobiles and lumber. Mr. Croft predicts a large reciprocal trade. It is quite true that New Zealand would prefer to deal with Canada rather than draw supplies from the United States of America. But what is puzzling most New Zealand minds today is what Canada will draw from New Zealand in reciprocal trade. It is quite true that Canada ruined a profitable trade with this Dominion when it placed an embargo on butter, but it is also appreciated that it was the action of the United States in elosing her market for milk products which forced Canadians to do this. It was this Dominion which ultimately suffered from the United States action. Canada’s action was actually selfdefensive. The whole business of the erection of these tariffs, however, reveals what an inadequate weapon tariffs arc to create prosperity. They can only damage, they cannot build up.
