WEATHER FORECAST
General Situation.—An intense anti-cyclone is centred east of the South Island, while an extensive depression is situated on the western Tasman Sea, its centre being located ovfr Tasmania. Forecast. —Winds: Moderate southerly in the North Island, elsewhere northerly and northerlics soon becoming general and later freshening. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rough, but decreasing north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura, elsewhere smooth but later rising on the West Coast of the South Island. Tasman Sea: Moderate north winds and moderate seas; wind and sea later rising. Weather; Mainly fine but conditions becoming unsettled shortly in the western and southern districts of the South Island, with rain developing and becoming fairly general. Mild temperatures. The New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, report for 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Bright sunshine, 2 hours. Rainfall, 34 inches. Shade temperature, maximum 57 deg. Fahr., minimum 46 deg. Fahr. Phases of the RJrooa.—August: New moon, August 2; first quarter, August 9; full moon, August 18; last quarter, August 26.
