STOCK MARKETS

WAVERLEY SALE. There was a large attendance of buyers from northern districts at the fortnightly sale held by the Farmers’ Uo-operative Dairy Society of New Zealand, Ltd., at Wa yesterday. Their report states there was a small yarding of sheep and a good one of dairy cattle. Good heifers, cloeo up, were in demand, and prices ranged from £8 5s down to £4 for inferior sorts and late calvers. White-faced ewe hoggets sold to 9s 7d, and black-faced hoggets sold up to Ils 6d. SALES OF THE WEEK The Farmers’ Co-op. Organisation Society of New Zealand, Ltd. report as follows:-—The tone of the stock market has very much improved during the last week and business in both yard and paddock has shown a decided turn for the better. Dairy stock still continue to command most attention and there is every likelihood of the demand exceeding the supply when our local farmers are ready to buy. Weather conditions have been anything but good and stock on the whole are showing the effects of the cold bleak winds experienced. Yearling heifers are still in keen demand, and good quality cattle aro being eagerly sought after, and as stated in previous reports aro mostly being bought by outside buyers. During the week we have disposed of 300 yearling heifers, the great major ity of which are being trucked to a northern buyer. Fat cows have commanded more attention during the wook and we report several sales at slightly-advanced prices.

Most of the dry fat cows on account of dairy farmers have been disposed of and this accounts for butchers having to supply all their wants with fat run cattle. Fat heifers and cows are most in demand, very few bullocks having changed hands. Fat ewes are still selling freely and the market shows an upward tendency, prices ranging from 10s 6d to Ils 6d Fat wethers seem to bo in shorty supply, but the price still stays at from 1.4 s to 15s. Several lines of ewes in lamb to S.D. have changed hands, but as the ewes are now so close to lambing very little business can be expected in this connection, the following prices have been realised for full-mouth ewes, r.w. S.D., 10s, Ils 6d, 12s 6d and younger sorts, 13s 6d. There is little to report with regard to the store cattle market, excepting that sound empty cows have consider ably improved in price and aro now selling nt from 25s to £2 5s according to quality. Bobby calves aro beginning to make their appearance and we hear that the works prices are ranging from 2s 6d to 3s 6d.
