WHISPERING CAMPAIGN
PLOT AGAINST BANKS COMMUNISTS IN AMERICA CHICAGO, July 28. What appears to have been a na 1 ion-wide plot to undermine the banks was revealed by Federal agents, who raided the hotel room of George Row land, an alleged Communist, at Pontiac, Michigan, and found a number of documents detailing a “whispering campaign” against the banks through out the Middle West. It is understood that the techniqu' of the so-called Communists consisted of clandestinely telephoning hea- v depositors declaring that the various banks were unsafe and were expected to close. It is believed that such tactics were responsible for heavy withdrawals in June from a number of Chicago banks, many of which failed.
