Sir Thomas and Lady Sidey, who have been visiting Auckland and North of Auckland, have returned South. Mr. and Mrs. K. S. Mrs. Elizabeth Ashton, who has been laid up with bronchitis, has sufficiently recovered to leave to-day for Puriri, Thames Valley, to be present at the marriage of her niece, Miss Emmaline Smith. Mr. and Mrs. D. Sidey, of Lincoln College, are spending a holiday in Wanganui.

At Matau women are beginning to spin their own wool, stated Mrs. C. C. Jackson, president of the women’s division of the Farmers’ Union, last week. Mrs. Jackson added that some of the Matau people had gone even further and she ha*d seen some really good socks knitted from the product of the spinning wheels.

An English lady has discovered a new job (writes a London correspondent). She owns a pie bus. It is a gay, yellow van filled with coffee ami home-made cakes and buns. After pre paring the coffee and making the cakes. Miss Turner drives the car herself to theatre queues and gives the waiting people snack lunches. She is having great success. She was equally successful at the Derby and Ascot. There arc possibilities also iu having a seaside pitch during the summer, which she means to try, returning to London in time for the autumn theatrical season. Plunket Ball. Amongst the functions for August will be the Plunket Ball and bridge evening which is being organised by an energetic committee to aid the funds of the Plunket Society. Thu ball will be held in the Elrick on August 31 and bridge tables are to be arranged in the newly-acquired Victoria League Rooms in the same building. One of the features for the evening will be the exhibition dances given by Miss E. Wright and Miss V. Healy; also a ballet. The Melody Makers’ Dance Band has been engaged and with a splendid floor a most enjoyable evening is assured.
