THE RIGHT TYPE

BRITISH DEMONSTRATION A demonstration to interest British farmers in the breeding of pigs of the right type to compete with the foreign importer, and particularly the Danish importer, was held at the Stirling bacon-curing factory, Scotland, recently. It attracted a largo number of farmers and pig breeders. IDr. Calder of the Animal Breeding Research Department, Edinburgh, the demonstrator, explained the type, weight 'and quality which were the essential considerations in estimating the suitability and requirements for the bacon-trade. Breeding for early maturity and good conformation, he pointed out, were requisites for the production of top-quality bacon pigs. For the production of Wiltshire - and Ayrshire rolls, well-fin-ished pigs, ranging between 1801 b and 2201 b. live, weight, were in keenest demand. The Danes were invariably con sistent in putting sides of suitable' weight on the British markets. British farmers therefore conceded competitive strength to, the foreigner- by having home pigs always exceeding 2301 b. The chief indications of late-maturing types, he explained, were legginess, shallowness Of the sides and a drooping rump. This typo was not wanted. While length of sides was important, he was of opinion that this had been overstressed.
