“THE RULING VOICE"

TEATURB AT GRAND WALTER HUSTON STARRED It’ is a new kind of American underworld that comes in for an airing in First National’s “The Ruling Voice,” which is now at the Grand Theatre. All the flagrant violence that marks big town hoodlumism as pictured in previous films now gives way to the suave and efficiently businesslike operations of the grafters that feast off big business. There is no need for shootings, gang leaders and guns to make this picture effective and powerful. The undertakings of Jack Bannister, leader of a grafting syndicate, are so enormous and his methods so refined in their cruelty that it provides its own overpowering effect. There is more of a public appeal in “The Ruling Voice.” for instead of beer, these crooks derive their incomes from extortion from food merchants, manufacturers, and builders. The quality of the acting which wont into the making of this picture explains the hold it is able to maintain on an audience.

Linda Watkins is one of the finest! amateur pianists in the picture colony.

James Kirkwood began his career in a Grand Rapids furniture factory at the age of 12.

Bette Davis was once a life guard—and a good one. She is one of the finest swimmers in Hollywood.

Thomas Meighan was - originally destined for a medical career, and became an actor over his father’s protests.

Douglas Fairbanks received a great deal of help from Eastern royalties while making his new picture, “Around the World in 80 Minutes with Douglas Fairbanks.” The Maharanee of CoochBehar provided him with fifty elephants and attendants for a leopard shoot and he was able to photograph the entire herd beating the jungle in a hunt. While in Siam, Fairbanks dined at the royal banquet table with King Prajadhipok and was allowed to photograph the entertainment that followed.
