HERD TESTING

Herd testing is the only means by which the 44 robber” cow can be detected. It is the only way in which the output of a herd can be increased almost without cost. It does entail a

little more extra work in the shape of record-keeping, but the return it gives for the extra work is enormous. With ~ its corollary, the marking of calves from cows of proved productive qualifications, the benefits of testing may extend from one generation of stock to another. The records obtained make the outlay upon live stock purchased a true investment instead of being, as at present, often a gamble, and they will enhance correspondingly the value of any stock for sale. The arguments in favour of herd testing are innumerable; there are none to the contrary which are worthy of - consideration. The creation of district herd testing associations is a further step in the cooperation that is so vital to the progress of the dairy industry. No other effort that can be suggested will so quickly give results. Herd testing not only shows how to make a bad herd good; it shows how good herds may be still further improved, with increasing financial benefits to the stockowner who will heed the information it gives.— Waikato Times.
