MISS A. BLENNERHASSETT RETIRES After teaching at the Wanganui Girls’ College since May 27, 1901, Miss A. Blennerhassett has tendered her resignation to the Board of Govcr nors. “It is with regret that. I sever this connection with tho old school, j where I have spent most of the days of my life,” wrote Miss Blennerhas sett. Yesterday’s meeting of tho board decided that the chairman and the secretary should draw up a minute of appreciation of Miss Blennerhassett’s work and also forward a letter to her conveying appreciation of her long service. Her resignation was ac copted with regret and Miss Blennerhassett will relinquish her post as soon as tho board can conveniently arrange the matter. CHURCH SOCIAL KNOX CONGREGATION Ladies of the congregation of Knox Church, Gonville, provided a pleasant and attractive programme when a social afternoon was held in the Knox Church Hall on Wednesday. There was a large number present and as a result of the afternoon the church funds will benefit to the extent of £ll. Among those present were the Rev. ID. B. Malcolm, St. Peter’s Church, the Rev. J. Paterson, St. Paul’s Church, and tho Rev. H. Beggs, St. Andrew’s Church. An interesting and enjoyable musical programme was given. A ’cello solo was played by Miss Shearsbury. The Misses Astbury and Eggers also sang. Miss Veda Dunn played a violin solo and Miss Hilda Dunn a pianoforte solo. Mrs. Tilloy recited and tho progrimme contained other social items. Afternoon tea was dispensed to the guests and after community singing the function was brought to a close. DETERMINING SEX It looks as though sVrks will have to learn German in future and take their instructions frmo Berlin, since Professor Unterbcrgcr asserts that he can predetermine the sex of babies. The professor is head of the gynaecological section of the Koenigsberg Charity Hospital, and recently it. was reported that he had fulfilled the hopes of 52 out of 53 expectant mothers desirous of sons, and had also had marked sucecs with mothers whose previous children had always been girls. The consistent successful results in his trials carried out with what the Germans call “girls’ mothers,” are said to have eliminated tho possibility of his successes being mere accidents. Tho professor’s elixir is nothing more mysterious than a weak solution of bicarbonate of soda, and he was first led to experiment upon the human organism by his discovery that when he cured sterility in cows by the administration of the substance, the births that followed were always male. THE QUEEN’S GOWN Radiantly beautiful was tho gown chosen by Her Majesty for her third Court. The pink of sunset and the pale cold of dawn were blended in its colourings, and corsage and the graceful folds of the skirt glistened as though bathed in a flood of soft radiance as the movements of the royal wearer threw into light and shade the paillettes with which the chiffon foundation was sewn. Her Majesty’s Court train struck a triumphant note tn the richness of its Indian-pink beauty. This exquisite tone mingled with golden threads, and a deep border of richer gold threw into relief the rosy tone. The King wore tho full-dress uniform of Colonel-in-Chief of the Irish Guards, orders and decorations gleaming on the tunic of scarlet and gold. Her Majesty’s Order was the blue ribbon of the Garter.
