GOODE RESIGNS

OUTCOME OF INQUIRY Received July 28, 8.45 p.m. SYDNEY, July 28. Mr. J. C. Goode, Chief Transport Commissioner, this afternoon tendered his resignation in writing to the Minister of Transport, Mr. Bruxner. The Royal Commissioner who inquired into the charges of misconduct against J. C. Goode, Chief Transport Commissioner, formerly Superintendent of Goods Traffic for the New South Wales Railway Department, has presented his report. He found that Goode was guilty of serious misconduct. amounting to fraud upon the Railway Commissioners, and said that three cheques drawn by S. E. Vernon, which went through Goode’s bank account, were paid and received corruptly. Referring to transactions between Goode and one Davis, who was a railway cartage contractor, the Commissioner found that Davis received £lBOO more than he was entitled to from the Railway Department. In relation to certain transactions Goode had rendered himself liable to prosecution under the Secret Commissions Art. The Commissioner was unable to find any proof of misconduct in regard to Goode’s dealings with the British Express Carrying Company, or in relation to the purchase of twenty motor-lorries for use for railway cartage purposes. No Other Altoniative. Goode’s letter of resignation contained the following passage: “I feel that the terms of the Royal Commissioner’s report leaves me no alternative but to resign my office. Mr Bruxner comments that the report completely vindicates the present Government. The former Chief Railway Commissioner, Mr W. J. Cleary, whom Mr Lang retired, will be reinstated in his original position and also Mr S. Maddocks, as charman of the Metropolitan Transport Trust. Amend ing legislation will be passed for this purpose.
