GIRL’S AWFUL DEATH
VAIN FIGHT WITH SHARKS. SUVA, Juno 24. A report from the town of Nabukeru in the Yasawa Islands, states that a native gir] has been eaten by sharks. Two native girls, named Esita and Asena, were fishing near the shore reef, both wearing goggles and diving under the rocks for fish. About three chains separated the girls and Esita heard Asena scream for help. She went to her assistance in water about three fathoms deep, and when close to the struggling girl in bloodstained water, saw the fins of sharks, Esita caught hold of Asena, and swam with her towards the shore while the sharks followed, still attacking the wojinded girl. Esita managed to tow Asena into shallow water, and then the sharks dragged her away. Asena was terribly mutilated and almost dead, and Esita ran up the shore screaming for help. The whole village turned out, but arrived to find only the girl’- head and some bones. Mr. Hicks, in a launch, brought the remains ashore. The sharks are described as of a small, vicious and daring species.
