COAL MINERS’ DISPUTE

CONFERENCE AT AUCKLAND. I Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND. June 28. The conference between the Northern Coal Mine Owners’ Association and the Northern Miners’ Union was opened in Auckland this morning. After sitting all day proceedings were adjourned until to-morrow. The representaitves of the owners, who were directors of the Taupiri, Renown, Pukemiro, Glen Afton and Ilikurangi Companies, were presided over b t y Mr. W. D. Holgate, president of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Association while the men’s delegates were presided over by Mr. T. Bougher, of Glen Afton, who has been, elected president of the Northern Miners’ Union. Mr. T. O. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Coal Mine Owners’ Association, and Air. A. McLagan, secretary of the United Mine Workers’ Union, were also present. The proceedings were confined to a discussion of the owners’ terms as originally presented to the miners’ delegates at the first conference on May 6. Of tlie 38 clauses they contain 34 were tentatively dealt with. The greater part of the proceedings tomorrow will be devoted to a discussion of the miners’ counter proposals. It is probable that both sides will then consider the proposals and counterproposals among themselves with a view to coming to an agreement, after which the final sitting will be held to deal with points over whielj disagreement mav exist.
