CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The Marton Chamber of Commerce met in the Jockey Club rooms on Thursday eve f ing, the president, Mr. J. S. Bush, in the chair. Also present were Alessrs. J. Mogridge sent., H. Y. Cameron, H. C. Date, G. B. Gregory, F. R. H. Brice. T. Low, A. A. Mclndoe, J. Shine, H. Batchelar and K. A. Williams (secretary). Correspondence was largely of a formal nature, being received. The president, stated that the representations of the chamber to have mails carried on the south-bound Limited express had been given effect to, the mails being carried as far as Taihape and thence being brought down by slow train, arriving in Alarton by nine o’clock.

The meeting was unanimous that telephone rentals are too high, and it was resolved that a letter of emphatic protest at the charges be forwarded to the Postmaster-General with a recommendation that reductions be effected. A copy of the letter is to be forwarded to the Associated Chambers and Post and Telegraph Department. Following the reading of a circular from the Associated Chambers of Commerce anent hire purchase agreements the secretary gave an interesting interpretation of the present trend of this system of trading. “The old form of hire purchase trading,” he said, ‘‘ is going by the board in favour of conditional purchase agreements. The vendor can determine a contract, but not the purchaser. In the event of payments getting into arrears, the vendor may ‘ seize the chattel, keep it, and sue the pur chaser for the outstanding balance. Ihe vendor may sell the chattel and claim on the present value of the balance outstanding, on an actuarial calculation, thereby suffering no dam age. ’ ’

“Why are these conditions of pur chase not made very clear in the agreement at time of sale?” asked Mr. 11. C. Date. “To catch the unsuspecting pur chaser,” replied Mr. Williams, “if u bankrupt holds goods on hire pur chase, and three-fourths have 'been paid, the assignee may pay the bal ance to retain the balance of equity. If the goods are disposed of within two months of bankruptcy, the risk is the vendor’s.”

An address on monetary problems is to be given in Alarton by Mr. A. N. Eield, the author of “The Truth About, the Slump.” The question of bank overdraft in terest rates was raised by Air. FBrice, who, after outlining the trend of a meeting of overdraft clients and a deputation to Wellington, asked that, the chamber should join in with a proposed meeting of these clients and the Farmers’ Union, Marton branch, to protest at the continued high rati' of interest charged by the banks on overdraft accounts. “Other institu lions,” said Air. Brice, “have been compulsorily reduced, but the banks have been left out.” It was finally resolved that the chamber be represented at the suggested meeting with an “open mind.” Mr. Bush was elected representative. MARTON HARRIERS 'flic Alarton harriers will meet for today’s run at the Alarton Walin' l at 2.30 p.m.
