KIDNAPPED DOCTOR
LIBERATION BY POLICE. NEW YORK, June 1. Coincident with the Lindbergh case, Dr. James Parker was kidnapped and held for £2OOO ransom, but the police seized and arrested 11 of the gang and freed Dr. Parker unharmed. A jury found eight of them guilty and they were sentenced to from five to 25 years 3 imprisonment. The accused included James Betson, who had been a city detective for 25 years. He was a candidate for the Mayoralty and conspired with Joseph Pursifal, a former police magistrate, who was the intermediary in the ransom negotiations. The latter confessed nnd was sentenced to fiv eyears ’imprisonment. It was one of those rare instances s > n «t kidnapping became a nation-wide menace in which the victim was confronted with his abductors and his iiiory led to their conviction.
