“Time Signals.”
“Th© city engineer has reported to the committee on the proposal to reerect the town clock, which, owing to the cost involved, is impracticable at the present time. However, the engineer has been instructed to report on the question of alternative methods, by bell and siren, of giving time sig rials in the city.” This was a clause in the Works Committee report adopted by the Wanganui City Council last night. Big Charity Effort liugby’s charity day in Wanganui has been fixed for August 20, when the Police and Press teams are to take the field. In connection with this attraction, which is to be pre ceded by a match between the brass and pipe bunds of the city, an ar' union, with £5O alluvial gold in prizes, is being promoted. Tickets are being printed and will b* on sale on July 1 Orders for over £7O worth have been taken by the police already, and it is intended to thoroughly launch the campaign on the date stated. With the exception of the £5O paid for the gold, every penny raised will be de voted to charity. Last year this or ganisation raised £316 for deserving objects and it is hoped to double that total this season.
