SONGS AND DANCING

MANAWATU COMPETITIONS

THE SUCCESSFUL ENTRANTS Continuation of the Alanawatu Competitions Society festival at Palmerston North has brought out some fine talent, and the end of the festival is now nearing. The judge of the brass instrument section was loud in his praise of the work in this class. He eulogised the winners’ performance and pointed out that the Manawatu Competitions Society was to be complimented on introducing this feature on its schedule. It was a class worthy of the greatest encouragement. Tho solo performances were particularly bright, and two of the young men were to be heartily congratulated. In the quartet the night, presentation had shown an improvement, there having been a nice balance and more attention to detail.

Professor AL Walker and Afr. S. Warwick, judges of tho elocutionary class, referred to the recital with musical accompaniment, for boys or girls under 16 years, as an outstanding class. No fewer than. 18 had taken highly commended awards, and this in itself reflected the merit of tho winner. The judges went on to point out the fact that, some children were handicapped by being too young for certain classes, while they added to their difficulties by selecting hard passages. The Shakespearean recitations had made a disappointing class and it would be more pleasing to see greater attention paid to England’s greatest poet.
