SLANDER AND WHISPERINGS.
Political leaders who are carrying such a weight of responsibility .should be spared this. The burdens of office and the legitimate criticism which they are sure to encounter are load enough. But the harm does not end with tho person who is slandered. Baseless slander destroys confidence in any man holding high office. It multiplies his difficulties. Suggestions that a Minister has been callous or unsympathetic, or has said this or that (which is either untrue or grossly distorted), creates a feeling of antagonism which it is very hard to remove. Citizens who wish to help in mooting the unemployment can at least give some assistance in ending this cause of trouble. We do not suggest that they should withhold criticism, but they should keep to legitimate criticism which they would bo prepared to repeat to the' face of the person criticised.
