THE RIVERTON CAMP.

Plans for tho erection of a recreation hut at the Riverton Camp are practically complete, and the Rev. John Chisholm’s letter informs the public that the cost will be between 30 and 40 pounds. It is necessary to ask the public to contrib ite towards thi_ expenditure. This is a necessary work and it can be carried out by public subscription. Many calls are made by the Government through taxation and by special appeals, which are not made public, ipon business men and upon those who are employed, but even with a knowledge of th.se calls, we still say that those who can give should do so to provide a recreation centre for the single men in this camp which is now entering the wii.lcr months in a location where the ordinary amenities are scarce. It ’ a fact tha when men in large groups are in camps, they become more or less helpless unless there is some organisation which will improve the conditions and thj spirit of the campers to an extent which will show the expenditure involved to be very small indeed. This is an opportunity for a practical demonstration of public sympathy, and when we remember that every man and woman who is employed to day, however much the salaries may have been reduced, must count himself or herself fortunate, we think that a little can be spared to build the sum required for this scheme. We will therefore be very pleased to receive and acknowledge any contributions the ymay make to the fund, which is being controlled by the P.S.S.A. on behalf of the relief workers in the Riverton camp.—Southland Times.
