The following particulars regarding the Clydesdale, published in the British Herdmen’s Journal, will prove interesting to breeders of draught horses. While there has been an extraordinary development in tho. type, even during tho last 50 years, the essential characteristics of the breed haye been consistently maintained. These are w.cight, size and wearing quality, combined wit h exceptional activity. As a typical and influential sire Sir Everard had few equals. When fie was six years old, he stood 17 hands .[in. high, girthed Bft. round the heart, and weighed 20|cwt., or 2,3241 b. He measured 26in. round the upper muscles of the forearm, 17in. round tho knee. Ilin, below the knee, and I2in. below the hock. Another characteristic of Ihe breed is longevity. Many of the most notable sires in its history have had long lives. Montrave Mack died when 26, and his grand-dam, Moss Rose, when she was 27. Macgregor was 22; Baron’s Pride 27; Auchenflower 21; Prince of Wales 22; Hiawatha 23; Royal Favourite 25; Bonnie Buchlyvie. 21; and Danure Footprint 22. Among mares Ambrosine was 25 ami Poor Girl 30, when they passed out. Very high prices have been paid for Clydesdale breeding stock. The highest individual figure was £9500. paid at auction for Baron of .Buchlyvie in December, 1911. Ills son, Bonnie Buchlyvie, realised 5000 guineas under the hammer in .1915. As regards females the first to reach a four figure price at public, auction was the two vear-old filly Queen of the Roses, which made 1000 guineas in 1892, and in 1919, the brood mare, Dunure Glad-Eye was auctioned for 1850 guineas.
