THE VEGETABLE GARDEN

Fur the disposal of garden refuse such as pruning*, hedge clippings, and vegetable refuse, a neat and excellent incinerator can be made from a disused iron tar barrel. By cutting a hole near the bottom large enough to remove the ashes, and a few holes round the sides to create a draught, almost any garden refuse can be burnt, and ashes obtained for the garden use. Asparagus tops should now be sufficiently ripened for cutting back. Cut the shoots off level with the ground and clean the ground from all weeds. Cabbages, cauliflowers and lettuce can still be planted. To keep up a supply of turnips a sowing should be made in good soil about every four weeks. Pay special attention to weeding and thinning of seedling crops and dusting with lime or other slug preventives. An occasional sprinkling of superphosphate acts as a preventive against slugs, as well as a fertiliser. The final earthing-up of celery should no longer be delayed. Do this when the soil is fairly dry and easilv workable. In selecting sites for planting early potatoes choose ground of a comparatively light, free nature, and situations free from frosts. If the sets have been treated as advised, they should be sufficiently advanced for planting. Potatoes, onions and shallots may be planed any time during the present month. Plant in ground that has been well worked and manured for previous crops. Attend to harvesting pumpkins, marrows, pie melons, potatoes, kumeras, etc., as they mature. The ground from which these crops are taken, if not required for present cropping, should be sown in green crops.
