In primitive dwellings fires were lighted in the centre of the room, and the smoke escaped through a hole in the roof. The Normans invented a device for collecting the smoke, which resembled a cloak or mantle. The projecting mantelpiece, which. with the invention of the chimney, has lost its original use, is a convenient survival.
