FUN AND FRIVOLITY

PARISIAN UNDERWORLD | - SP.C.A. BALL Although not with the air of intrigue and mystery that might be expected in the Parisian Underworld, the ball of that name held in aid of S.P.C.A. funds last night at the Victoria League rooms was enjoyed by all who attended. Of the two rooms used, one had been set aside for the bridge players, and here they enjoyed som quiet games of that fascinating pastime apart from the music and frivolity of the dancers. In the second room, however, there was laughter and movement and the strains of dance music from the Melody Makers’ Orchestra kept feet tapping for many hours. Costumes were varied and created a certain air of Parisian society with characters of ■mysterious-looking dark-cloaked individuals and very realistic apaches. The majority, however, were in evening dress, and the fashionable frocks of the ladies presented a striking contrast to the others in fancy garb. Duties of M.C. were capably carried out by a villianous-lo'Aing coster in the person of Mr. Maitland, inspector of the S.P.C.A. Several most entertaining interludes were introduced throughout the evening, the chief of these being th one Act tragedy entitled “The Death of Alonzo.” This play was written by Marilyn. McGill, who took the part ol the bored and sophist mated society lady. Hilton Osborne took the part of her husband’s friend George, while the husband’s part was pl: yed by Jim. Scott. Alonzo, the most ferocious dog

'in Wanganui, took his part equably, 'and fulfilled all that was de ’red of ! him. i Apache dancing and a tap dance j were given by Miss Gwen O’Mahoney i and George Allen, and greatly appreciated. Supper arrangements were capably carried through by an energetic ladies’ committee. Among those at the bridge tables were: Mesdames Armstrong. Aves, Hine, Adams, S. Burnett, F.
