LAND SETTLEMENT
A WHAKATANE SCHEME RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT I Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, May 19. A scheme to place 5000 men on the land as a means of overcoming the unemployment probler was placed before the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Hon, E. A. P’nsom and C. E. Maemilan by Messrs W. Sullivan, Mayor of Whaka tane, P. L. Baird, and A. C. Sutherland, representing a committee of residents in tho Whakatane district, wh<? fonuu lated it. The basis is an internal loan of £6,150,000, and the proposed settlement is of a permanent character. The land is Crown land suitable for dairying, and the scheme is to te given to any one who, in the opinion of the commit tee appointed to control the schemet would become a suitable settler and who is not possessed of sufficient land to make a living. Tho Ministers agreed that the scheme was worthy of consideration.
