NO RAILWAY TICKET A charge of travelling in a railway carriage between Marton and Taihape on May 19 without having previously paid the proper fare and with intent to evade payment thereof was preferred against Thomas Walsh and George Poulton at the Taihape Magistrate's* Court yesterday. Walsh and Poulton were also charged with vagrancy. Messrs E. Loader and W. 11. Fookes. J.’sP. occupied the Bench. The accused pleaded guilty to both charges. Sergeant Joyce said that Walsh and Poulton had boarded the “Limited” express at Marton on the “ blind” side and jumped off near the signal box at Taihape as the train was drawing into the station. The accused had been arrested by Constable Batchelor. Walsh had a number of previous convictions. The accused had come from Christchurch to Wellington and then on to Napier and back to Palmerston and then to Marton and on to Taihape. Their funds were now exhausted. Walsh said that Poulton’s mother had paid Poulton’s fare and his own. They could not find work and had walked most of the way to the places they had visited. Occasionally they were given a ride. They became very tired of walking and boarded the train at Marton. Ho used to work in Taihape before and thought he might be able to find employment in this district. On the charge of travelling without a ticket, Walsh and Poulton were ea*ch convicted and ordered to pay the amount of the fare from Marton to Taihape. namely 4s 7d, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. Walsh was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment on the vagrancy charge. Poulton was convicted and discharged on the charge of vagranev.
