RELIEF CAMP AT MAKOWHAI On Thursday afternoon Alessrs J. H. Perritt, F. O. Bailey and S. W. Ingram, who were appointed a committee to act. with officials of the Public Works Department, together with Air. A. K. Drew (county clerk) and Air. H. V. Bond (county engineer) made a visit, of inspection to tho camp site. The situation is an ideal one and a special feature is the drainage system. A line bathing pool has been marked off in the river and the men are at present, preparing an area of ground for a vegetable garden, and levelling a piece of ground for recreation purposes. A large dining hall has been erected, together with a comfortable cook house. The dining hall will also be used for recreation during the winter evenings. The visiting committee were informed that reading matter was in short supply. Air. A. K. Drew busied himself, with the result that a good supply of books and magazines, and playing cards, was sent down on Wednesday morning. Further supplies will be welcomed and may be sent to the county office. A football has been secured for their use and it is hoped to arrange some games for the men. The use of a piano and a wireless set is practically assured, and arrangements have already been made for tho visit of concert par ties, etc. Tho usual occupations of the workers is varied; one is a chemist, and h hospital tent has been erected, which will be under his direction.
