MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL The ordinary monthly meeting of the Afanawatu County Council was held on Tuesday. Present: Councillors W. E. Barber (chairman), W. E. Pearce, D. W. Reid, J. H. Perrctt, Jas. Boyce, J. F. AlcKelvic and H. H. Hunt. Inward correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From N.Z. Railways forwarding voucher for tramway charges collected. —Received. From Treasury forwarding vouchers for fines collected under by-laws.—Re-ceived. From Department of H i alth re council’s contribution towards salary and expenses of health inspector. —Question to be considered at a later date. From Waitemata County Council expressing thanks for promise of support in proposed appeal case re removal of power poles, and regret was expressed in not being able to get the support of the Counties’ Association Executive. It was resolved that a letter be sent to the Counties’ Association re the question. From Palmerston North Free Ambulance asking the council to appoint a representative to act on the executive. —Resolved that the matter be loft in the hands of Councillor Boyce to re port to next meeting. From Department of Lands am! , Survey re appointment of Tangimoana ; Domain Board.—Resolved that the matter be left in the hauls of Councillor j Hunt. From R. From Unemployment Board intimat- . ing that surplus tree stocks arc available for cost of lifting, packing and i freight. It was resolved to draw the attention of the Unemployment Board ' to tho desirability of continuing tree planting at Tangimoana, as there is still over 1000 acres of suitable land, at pre- ! sent used for no purpose, that could ; be planted. Treasurer’s Report The treasurer reported on the finan cos of the county as follows:—County fund account, dr. £4206 16s sd; loan account, cr. £1335 8s 3d; AI.H. Loan account, cr. £56 10s 3d. Riding amounts available for expenditure to March 31. 1932: Sandon £5 7s Id, Ml. Stewart £lO 15s lOd, Waitohi £64 2s 7d, Rongotea, £9 2s Id. Carnarvon £56 10s lid. Kawakawa £ll 5s 9d, Awahou £27 7s lid. County Engineer The county engineer reported as fol lows:— Alain Highways.—Two corners on Road have been widened and bituminised. Drainage matters arc being attended to on all main highways. Metal is being carted out of tho local pit on the Whirokino Road for future use on that highway. The usual maintenance and grading has been continued on all main highways. Lupins ;.re being grubbed out on Himitarigi-Rangiotu Road at the intersection of side roads to improve traffic visiion. Ridings Sandon. A bridge on Taylor’s Line has been repaired. Tho grader has been cutting back the grass sides on AfcDonell’s Line. Gorse has been cut on tho reserve at the corner of White man’s Road, and several roads have been graded. Mt. Stewart. —Water channels and drains have now been cleaned out and formed from Mt. BiggM School to the Feilding borough boundary and along Rakihou Road. Similar work is now being done on Ranfurly Road. A 24inch concrete pipe culvert on Rakohou Road has been lengthened. The surface of Kawakawa Road has born straightened up Rincc being damaged by flood water. Waitohi.— Stormwater drainage matters have been finalised in Hammond’s lane. The necessary 18-inch pipes have been laid and the adjoining drains dug. Penny’s Lino has been patched and necessary banking carried out. Grading has been continued where necessary. Rongotea.—Grading has been continued on the various roads. A 9-inch culvert has been put in on Tompkins' Line for Air Leicester. Kawakawa. Drains have been cleaned out on Taikorea and Raupo Roads. Alotalling has been carried out for 40 chains on the Downs Road. This work has been carried out by the council’s staff on behalf of and at the cost of the Public Works Department. Several of the roads in this riding have been graded. Carnarvon.—The grader has been employed cutting out the grass sides on Lake Road, and surface grading har been done on other roads. Awahou.—The grading of Milo Drain Road has been completed, and the road left in fairly good shape. Several other roads have been graded. Alain Drain Road.—Tho usual maintenance has been continued on this road and fennell has been cut back from the road. Crushin' Plant.—This plant has boon working for a short period for the s’/i ply of metal for Downs Road. Tramway Manager The tramway manager reported that a credit of £1 2s Id was shown on the month’s account. The chief items of

traffic wero:—Minerals and manure, 92. J tons; grain and merchandise, 18 tons; cheese and eggs, 130 crates; cream, 46 cans; sheep and pigs, 88 trucks; wool, 207 bales; metal, 240 cubic yards. Traffic Inspector The traffic inspector reported that a number of lorries had been stopped during the month and their licenses examined. One driver had no traffic disc and could not produce his license. I have written Hastings Borough and am informed that the driver in nuestion had no heavy traffic license. On February 16 1 visited Main Drain Road ami weighed up two lorries carting logs. Both were overweight, and informations have been laid against the owners. One driver in the Oroua County was fined £3 and costs for carrying a load greater than that allowed by his license. A number of cyclists for riding on the footpath in Kairanga County, have had informations laid against them. A number of persons for allowing stock to wander, were fined from 10s to 40s. Some of the motordrivers who failed to keep to the left of the white lines at tho Manawatu Gorge wero fined 20s and costs. Otehr eases will be heard on the Sth inst. On February 24 and 25. I again visited the Afanawatu Gorge, with William Brockie. foreman of the Gorge Road, and took the names of 30 drivers who failed to keep to the left of the white 1 nos. These have had informatione laid against them, and the cases will be heard on 22nd inst. Rate Collector The rate collector reported that during the month 337 payments had been made, the amount received being £69FI 4s 9d. The position of current ratee is as follows:—General rate: Struck, £13,187 Sslld; rebates allowed, £1328 15s 6d; collected, £10,263 3s lOd; outstanding, £l6Ol 9s 7d. Hospital rates Struck, £2741 3s lid; collected, £2427 14s 2d; outstanding, £313 9s 9d. Special rates; Struck, £1466 2s 6d; collected £1279 6s 7d; outstanding. £lB6 15s lid. Arrears of rates outstanding at March 31. 1931 (last three years) £2291 lOg lid; collected, £1276 9s; outstanding, £lOl5 Is.lid. Judgment for several amounts of arrears was obtained at last sitting of the Court at Bulls and further cases are being proceeded with.
